Milonga?

Milonga means a couple of different things.

First, a milonga is a tango dance party.

Second, a milonga is a type of dance, similar to tango, but faster and friskier, utilizing similar steps, but usually in simpler patterns since the tempo is too fast for complicated patterns. Musically, it feels like a cross between a tango and polka. Emotionally, it's just pure fun, not as "serious" as argentine tango, very playful, very flirtacious, very naughty.

Milonga is the joyful expression of tango.

And a style of music. (Se dice de mi, Reliquias portenas...)
Unsurprisingly, the milonga (dance) is danced on milongas (music pieces).

Just wanted to add that dancing a Milonga you must step on every beat.

Oh, yeah, that's right. And I ALWAYS get tripped up on that, too, when sometimes my partners double up the rhythm doing traspie, or cut in half taking a little pause. I get so caught up in the step, step, step of milonga. Oh, and anyone ever noticed that with 100 people all wearing leather shoes, when they all start dancing milonga in unison it sounds like an army of grasshoppers munching crops? Munch, munch, munch. I know, I'm being silly.

hahahaha that's really funny  Fortunately, the number of couples on the dance floor in our studio is usually less than 6-7, so the effect isn't as pronounced

Milonga: Triple Meaning

You can dance a milonga to a milonga at a milonga.

When beginners see "Milonga" they (Including myself in pre-understanding days) get the impression that there will only be milonga danced. Tricky, unless explained early in their tango life.

It's good to include a basic summay of tango terms in a beginning class to avoid this confusion. :-)

It would help, for sure, Polly. Or be like me. Be a member of df. :)

Exactly, Sagitta. I don't need to learn these terms in a class when I have everyone on DF to ask. :D

I think there is a cake named "milonga". Let's see if I can find the recipe.
Welcome to df casa. Why casa, house? I saw the movies that you have as your avatar. I liked the kid scene and the trio dances.
