Hey, my friend is going to Miami today for a week. She dances casually... just lookin' for good clean fun, and she'll probably go by herself. Can anyone recommend a place? Thanks! :)

Thursdays: Mango Club in South Beach
Fridays and Saturdays: Bermudas (it may have changed name since last I visited).

There are other cool places you may find in local directory. I can't remember all names.

I'm going to this!!! it's 2 weeks after LA Congress weeeeee :D
It's mostly Afro-Cuban with a few casino/rueda classes! I took a guaguanco and yambu class yesterday so I'm really looking forward to learning more!
Anyone else going?

I havent visited Bermuda for a long time but I know it was closed for a little while. I dont know how is it now, I dont hear much from that place, I would have to do a research and find out.

About Club Mystique , this place used to be at Hilton Airport and they have been moved to Days Inn Airport ( which the club is right next to it ) and now is called Cafe Mystique.

They are good on Thursday and Sunday, if you really want to enjoy the dance and have enought space then you must bring your dancing partner or tell someone to come in at 10:00pm , because after 11:00 is starting to get crowded.

On Friday is good on Happy Hour 7:00pm - 9:00pm ( With DJ Humberto ) he is good playing all kind of song from Charanga to Guaguanco, but you must bring your own dancing partner. Last time I visited one Friday and he was playing my song " Abre Que Voy ( Miguel Enriquez ) " you must have to listen that song, it turns my legs electrified

Miami

Hum :? I visit it with one of my cousins around 1998 and I did not bring a partner. I did some asking around at first but I danced a lot.

May be that things have changed :?

I heartily recommend Cafe Mystique to sociologists seeking a case study of how many unsmiling, cliquish dancers you can cram into a small space and subject to an unimaginative music mix. I cannot, however, recommend it to a salsero looking to actually go dancing. There are literally people who act as dance police to eject anyone who makes a mistake during ruedas. "Standoffish" doesn't begin to describe the salseras; "racist" would be the word I'd use to describe my interactions with most of them. It is easily the worst salsa club I have ever been to, anywhere.

Ouch! I'm sorry you had a bad experience there. I've made plenty of mistakes during ruedas without any enforcement actions from the dance police. On the other hand, I've never jumped into a rueda full of strangers uninvited either. They have a "class" which basically consists of a huge rueda in which everybody is invited to participate. When I got lost, the girls were nice enough to do their steps anyway so I could get an idea of how to do it.

Mangos plays some Salsa music, but it's more of a tourist spot than a real dance hang out. Still, it can be fun once in a while, especially for tourists.

There are salsa bars on every corner, like Starbucks, but most of them are full of people who only dance on Saturday night, so you wont find the hardcore dancers there.

My favorite weekly dance spot is Goldcoastballroom.com on Sunday nights. They have a huge dance floor, planty of tables and chairs for everybody, good a/c, byob, and pitchers of ice water at every table. I go at 3:30pm for the "on 2" class and dance Salsa until 8pm when they switch to ballroom music. They usually play a few good swings and hustles in the first half hour of ballroom. Then, you can eat the sandwich and cake that's included in your $10 cover and drive down to Cafe Mystique for some Cuban/Casino Salsa.

The best dancers by far get together for the borntosalsa.com parties at the Canadian club. It's mostly NY and LA styles with some ballroom and Casino. They need much more air conditioning though. DJ JoeyG plays Sala Dura music and the NY/LA Salsa crowd follows him around. He started playing at Legends Cafe in Hollywood last week every Friday. He alternates sets there with a good band called Caribbean Sound.

The best Casino dancers get together when SalsaLovers.com throws a party. They play mostly Cuban Salsa music (Timba).

wait wait, you mean Hollywood the town in Florida, near Ft Lauderdale?

i'm asking because I'll be in Hollywood for a ballroom comp in September and would LOVE the chance to salsa in Florida....esp if it's a club where i will easily find other on-2 (ny style) dancers and music in the salsa dura style.

Yes, there are plenty of on-2 dancers there, but don't forget to check back in a month to be sure DJ JoeyG is still there because I went to the club the Friday before last after a nearby (on-2) Salsa class and we were the only dancers there. You know how DJ's move around a lot. There's no guarantee he'll still be there in September.

I guess you'll be in town for USBC, right?
