Do you like Piazzola?

I have listened to tango music for 2 years, I know almost of all composers and orchestras and I also have DJing experience. But I cant understand do people really like Piazzola? Because for me its some kind of torture to listen Piazzola's music. I think its not real tango music and this is why its very hard to dance with Piazzola's music. In my opinion, Piazzola produced his music for people just to listen, not to dance. So Piazzola's music is very harmfull for tango dance and I hope his style wont spread.

As you know, when Carlos Gardel became famous, people forgot to dance for a while. Because Gardel's new vocal and lyrical style changed many things and people started to listen Gardel's pieces just to listen, not to dance. I mean with Gardel, tango music and lyrics became more important than dance. So Piazzola is very similar to Gardel and these two musician's style is killing tango dance.

I think the grand masters of tango music are Canaro, Di sarli, D'Arienzo, Biaggi, Pugliese, Fresedo, Donato, Calo, Troilo and other golden age musicians. Who the hell is Piazzola?

After 4-5 years of dancing, you will get workshops "Interpreting Piazzolla" so you will be able to dance then to Piazzola and other modern tangos :D

I like Piazzolla, but not for dancing too; Libertango is too fast, Oblivion and Milonga del Angel are slow so okay. I dont think there's anything harmful in his music its just too comp, icated to do anything other than choeraography. I believe he wrote Vuelvo Al Sur though.

Do you think this music and this dance is tango?

Look at Chicho's orange jacket, weird hair style and the sunglasses on his head :) Watch their dance please. Do you see anything about the real tango? I cant see a good posture, I cant see nice clothes and I cant hear tango rhythm. Can you?

Am I being thick here, or do I remember listening to a radio3 programme about Piazzola where they quoted him saying that he was writing music for listening NOT for dancing?

whilst one can dance to new music that has been written in an exploratory way (ie Piazzola felt he was being ultra modern and evolving tango music) often the conventions that are used when writing music for dancing, are over turned this is the whole point and why it was exciting music. There's no reason not to try to dance to it but it's difficult and there are musical reasons why it is difficult. I really don't understand why Wadpro seems to think that it is harmful to be adventurous?

Its harmfull because if this kind of music and dance spread and become popular, the real tango music and dance can be forgotten. Remember, rock-n-roll had killed tango in 1960's...

Carlos Gardel died 40 odd years ago and Piazzolla died in 1992. If Piazzolla was going to destroy tango in the way "rock and roll" allegedly did, it would have happened years ago. I mean come on.

Blimey, is this a game to translate every thread into one big "What Is Real Tango" thread?

I've decided from now on to post this every time this theme comes up:
T
he Parable of the Blind Men and the Elephant
by John Godfrey Saxe

It was six men of Indostan
To learning much inclined,
Who went to see the Elephant
Though all of them were blind,
That each by observation
Might satisfy his mind.

The First approached the Elephant
And, happening to fall
Against his broad and sturdy side,
At once began to bawl:
"God bless me, but the Elephant
Is very like a wall!"

The Second, feeling the tusk,
Cried, "Ho! what have we here
So very round and smooth and sharp?
To me 'tis very clear
This wonder of an Elephant
Is very like a spear!"

The Third approached the animal
And, happening to take
The squirming trunk within his hands,
Thus boldly up he spake:
"I see," quoth he, "The Elephant
Is very like a snake!"

The Fourth reached out an eager hand,
And felt about the knee:
"What most the wondrous beast is like
Is very plain," quoth he;
"Tis clear enough the Elephant
Is very like a tree!"

The Fifth, who chanced to touch the ear,
Said, "Even the blindest man
Can tell what this resembles most;
Deny the fact who can:
This marvel of an elephant
Is very like a fan!"

The Sixth no sooner had begun
About the beast to grope
Than, seizing on the swinging tail
That fell within his scope,
"I see," quoth he, "the Elephant
Is very like a rope!"

And so these men of Indostan
Disputed loud and long,
Each in his own opinion
Exceeding stiff and strong.
Though each was partly in the right,
They all were in the wrong!

C'mon DB, Piazzolla never wrote for dancers. He's a great composer and even the Argentine people eventually recognised this. the roots of his music are tango and he took it to a higher level.

Wadpro doesnt like his music. wahts wrong with that?

Well, without getting into the fascinating debate of whether it is tango or not, I love Piazzola's music. A lot of it clearly is more for listening than dancing, but a lot of it can be (and is) danced to. The tempo changes in some of his songs, may discourage some people from dancing to it, similar to some of Pugliese's music. Clearly, it's not for beginners, but a lot of people do like it.

I've edited a version of Bandoneon, both to shorten it, and to remove some of the rather lengthy intro, that many consider to be un-danceable. I usually get some positive feedback when I play it.

Re: Do you like Piazzolla?

Hi wadpro, tango is more than what you have got to know by now. So it is no question of taste, of like or dislike:

-Piazzolla learned from tango bandoneonists,
-he played in ordinary tango orchestras for many years,
-he also wrote easy-listening tango pieces,
-his advanced compositions quote tango instruments, melodies, topics,
-he lived within the tango community,
-he influenced tango musicians.

So, ergo, Piazzolla is tango, even his non-tango works belong to tango.
