Dancing effortlessly, but energetically

In recent lessons and coachings with my main pro and coach, we've been discussing this very subject of making the dancing come alive. One of the points that was made was pro dancers look like they do due in part to the years of experience they have in developing the correct level of effort and energy needed in the ways of movement of their dance. So much so that it is second nature.

sooo true you watch the top level pros and they look like they are taking a stroll in the park then you go over to them after the round and they are drenched in sweat!!

not to be argumentative regarding definition of fitness, but percent of body fat is only part of that...I have some size two gals in my classes who have virtually no cardio- vascular endurance...(having said that, I'd love to have 10% body fat...)...I have no idea where I am at right now in that regard...shrug....haven't had the test in a while...don't care to go on an anti-depressant...

yup...I take 3 hours of lessons and while I know that my pro take slittle mini vacations here and there during the lesson while I am too busy to notice, we donot stand around and chat...at all...and even though we are roughly the same age, grumble grumble, I am usually dying at the end of my lessons and he's like "ho hum"...and let's remember that I work at a gym...it is so annoying

the 10% body fat is for hotness.. not fitness LOL :D I agree and cardiovascular endurance is only part... functional training for power.. hypertrophy training for bulk and strength... HIIT/crossfit for fat burning

time under tension training for muscular endurance
and yoga and pilates and stretching for flexibility and having power over the full dynamic range

yep I work out a bit........

between dance and working out its almost a full time second job:p

There are a lot of tricks to this stuff working smoothly.
1. CBM at the right time and done correctly
2. Proper transitions between dance positions.
3. Use of the legs to create swing and sway
It can take years to really get these things right, but it can get easier. Endurance and strength can go a long way, but there are actually couples that get around working less and earning higher marks at the same time.

it is really a full time job to monitor what is a good intensity and what isn't

Yes, and it is hard to monitor on the competition floor! The adrenalin surge can kick in and I'm doing too much, the self consciousness can kick in and I'm doing too little. I can't really tell either way until I see the video.

But as you advance in your dancing, it becomes more and more important to understand what muscle groups are working and how, and which muscle groups are relaxed and not working!

Usually when you see someone look like they are working too hard, they are probably applying muscular pressure in a "wrong" muscle group (and their bodies are having to deal with tension that is hindering movement rather then helping), or they are using the muscle groups to "hold" or "clench".....It is "effortless" when my body has learned how to perform the actions well and has the stamina to maintain that level of work, but the amount of energy required is still the same (rather intense and focused).

Love this! It is interesting to see when that comes up too in my dancing. In my mind I may just really be trying to show how much I can do a movement, and instead it ends up looking sloppy.

Yes, at the end of my lessons I'm ready to collapse and teacher takes a sip of water and moves right on to the next student!
