Mmmm...violet candy... *chomp*chomp*chomp*

Parents have asked to go dancing with me. But not AT or WCS, which they consider to be too difficult for beginners. So, ballroom. They have asked me to find a place to go where they can take a beginner lesson before the social dance. Great. Am filled with vague unease bordering on dread. Gots to deal with this.

(Wish they'd try either WCS or AT. There, at least, I feel comfortable showing up and dancing. The closest I've gotten to BR in the last...oh, three years?...has been the two hustles I danced at a WCS social.)

Aw. The best salsa dancer in my city is moving to the west coast. I'm so excited for him, he needs a fresh start. He is going to be in HIGH demand the rest of the time he's here!!

They're your parents. What's the worst thing that can happen?

Ooops. I guess you've got a point. *grin*

Well, you'll have more in common with them as you share the experience, then, if they are beginners. Go to the lesson and pretend you don't know any ballroom, no expectations.

Dunno, Peach, if you're *that* far removed from BR, you'll likely feel beginner-ish anyway, neh? When in doubt, box it out?

It has nothing to do with actual execution of anything. I'm comfortable in the actual execution/non-execution of whatever I can or cannot do. The anxiety is coming purely from old demons and self-doubt/self-loathing from "flaming out" several years ago.

I fully realize that I'm psyching myself out...and am having a seriously hard time finding a way to stop myself from doing it so I can be calm about it.

Dunno if I can agree with Debussy being better than Chopin...it's a pretty close toss-up. But I do L.O.V.E LOVE "Canope" and "The Engulfed Cathedral." Two all-time favorites of mine. But still...

And, of course, nothing holds a candle to Bach. Beethoven gets close, but nothing tops Bach. Ever.

See, I dunno which one I like better either...they sort of go in phases. Chopin is great, but Debussy's harmonies...yum.

I'm not a big Bach fan, though...(shoot me now?). I just don't like baroque music, at all. Some stuff is ok to listen to, but not great. And I can't stand playing him.
I like Beethoven...but nowhere near as much as Chopin and Debussy :P

Phone interview with California employer Thursday. Very excited.

Has anyone done phone interviews before? Advice?

I've done phone interviews. Besides all the usual prep for an interview, like thinking of likely questions they will ask and how you want to answer them, phone-specific advice:

1. Sit comfortably, but with reasonably good posture, leaning forward a bit, and *smile* when you talk. Sounds silly when they can't see you, but it will affect how you sound to them.

2. Don't leave long silences, especially in response to questions. If a question stumps you for a moment, say "hmm" or "well" or something and if necessary even "I need a moment to think about that" rather than just silence. Same if you get hung up in the middle of an answer. Wind it up rather than stop to think about what to say next. (Doesn't mean there can't be any pauses or that you have to talk like a wind-up toy, but don't leave them hanging in silence for more than a few seconds).

3. Make sure your enthusiasm for the job comes through in your voice. Smiling will help that.

4. Send a hand-written thank-note immediately after the interview. It's another way to personalize the interaction.

Will your interview be with one person or a committee?

waltzgirl - Awesome tips, thanks so much!! Writing it down to review right before.

It will be two people, I believe.

I have this dilemma though. I am off the day before so I will have lots of time to prepare, only earlier today I scheduled an interview here at home for Wednsday.. it's a totally unfamiliar job field that I still have to research. If I go for this interview, I'll have to postpone preparing for the Cali phone interview. The Wed interview is something that I may not be good and may not be totally in to, the Thu interview is what I really really want. I should keep the Wed interview, maybe it will take the edge off the following day's interview.
