WCS Scene Getting Younger?

Well, long time no see! :D
Hey stranger . . . how the heck r u? I've been on here once in the last 3 1/2 years . . . playing a lot of music these days . . . was in four bands at once - just separated from one . . . had little or no time for dance, but am thinking of competing in May, and am getting my feet to re-learn the difference between left and left!

What's new with you?

BTW Tom, I assume that ur still dancing since ur on here . . . what r u doing most of your dancing in? WCS, 2 Step, ???

Moved back here almost a year and a half ago

Oh yes; ballroom and WCS. Take it you know that Robert sold the Paragon in Tempe almost 2 years ago. He still teaches there.

Long time, no see! You're not far from here...you should come up and dance some time.
Hi Jenn . . . yes, a very long time has gone by . . . I'd really like to come up and dance, but it's going to take a while for me to get back into dance shape. I tried a Hustle and a few WCS's last week . . . I had blisters by the end of the night. Of course, there were a few Night Club Two Steps, one Cha, one Waltz - I truly sucked . . .

Vince!!!!!!!!! Hi. :-D

I am doing well... or at least I was, until you reminded me just how boring Texas is.

Yes. I did quit DF ... five? six? years ago. I came back just over two years ago, when the death of a friend reminded me what's important to get in a huff over. Illness, death, world hunger? Yes. Irritating stuff in a virtual community? Not so much.

It's great to "see" you again. Hug your beautiful DW and DD for me. And good luck with getting back into dance competition. :-D

it's my take that the younger dancers can be in many ways more technically skilled but otherwise superficial; to me WCS is most enjoyable when it retains elements of flirtation and playfulness but like in other forms of creative expression, youth tends to associate virtuosity with speed; contrast joe satriani who shreds at 100 million baud vs. b.b. king who can say more and create more tension with one note held for 4 measures. you can also see reflected in how the music has changed and how it's gotten beat/percussive driven. but that's not to say that all younger dancers don't get it. some do - and when you combine that with an ability to move that comes with being younger i have had some great dances.

I missed this, tsb. I appreciate the awesomely descriptive post. :-D

thanks. ironically, i was just telling spitfire through FB yesterday how i had a AWFUL time WCS dancing tuesday night at the hacienda hotel in el segundo. a younger DJ was playing to a predominantly younger crowd, and it was ALL beat-driven thumpa-thumpa-thumpa music.

they played a couple of salsas, and even they were up around 115 BPM. nasty.

i finally requested something blues to dance to, and to my dismay, only 3 couples danced to it on the main floor. i left shortly thereafter.

And not much blues played at tonight's dance which I find so wonderful to dance to so I can relate to this.
