yesterday's activities

And I'm gonna do today b/c it's been so odd, and I want to remember details:

Cat decides I simply must get up and feed her, several times; must speak sharply to her about this behavior (that'll work, uh-huh, yeah)
Get up; note that "1-3 inches of snow" has turned into a dusting so light, even the driveway is clear; color me happy
Go to HFKAM to feed Cats FKAM, who are only mildly glad to see me; so soon we forget
Headache, likely brought on by no food, no water, and no caffeine; try to fix it, only partially succeed
Supermarket, eerily empty; people must have crammed it yesterday, but it's all mine, today
Staples to buy a calculator
Shoe repair guy to pick up dance shoes, which means I MUST go to studio to try them out and see if there has been significant improvement; have brief conversation with Mrs. Teach on the subject and maybe the shoes will be OK
To mall; proceed to spend money like a sailor on leave; by the time I drive away, I have three new pair of shoes, two new fry pans and a 2-qt saucepan for Spouse (who has been fussing about how I've removed the cooking tools from the house [duh] and who will reimburse me for his new pots n pans), and an unreasonable amount of loot from Sephora; I've been watching drag-queen makeup tutorials on YT, and it strikes me that there is a LOT of overlap between drag and ballroom makeup, so time to step up to the plate and buy some new makeup toys (brushes, primers, etc, etc)
Home, drink a liter of water and headache miraculously vanishes; duh
Sandwich, soup, and start to cook; this afternoon's entertainment originally included baking bread, but father asked me not to, as he's put on 5 lbs recently; I oblige, and the yeast and the bread flour go into storage
However, the ratatouille is almost done and the roasting chicken is headed into the stove in about 10 minutes, then time for a book, a cat, a nice meal, feet up, playing with new makeup, and worrying about money tomorrow, so basically, I'm hoping hard this day is OVER and it's now all about -- dare I say it -- relaxing

up before 0500, drive to Denver to review the personnel records of some of my folks. read, read, read (thankfully these records are all electronic so no dealing with folders of 20 yo paper.) break for 15 minute lunch, read, read, READ until 8 pm. esssh, 14 hours of sitting at a computer. Drive home during freezing fog. get passed by truck spreading road de-icer, which is now in a slimy film all over my car. How the heck will I get that stuff off? Home, finally. Fix margarita and accidentally drop a juiced lime on floor, which is promptly pounced on by puppy. Puppy barks at lime for a hour, alternately trying to eat it and trying to fight it. Puppy play destresses me and I have the best night's sleep in weeks. Yay for puppies!

Puppies and kittens: God's way of making sure we have joy, laughter and a sense of play. That much cute in a such a little package: a very good thing.

I'm going to fast forward past the last few weeks. I didn't do much that was memorable.

Yesterday: Up early. DS wants to go see Stars Wars Episode I in 3D. Check AMC Theater. Ye gods! Since when does it cost $13.50 to see a movie? Yes. I know there's a 3D surcharge. But still. When I was DS's age, movie tickets were $3.00 - $3.50. Full Price. Evening. I freely admit that I'm old. But still. More than fifty bucks for two people just to get in and get some overpriced popcorn. This is ridiculous. (Incidentally, I bought the AMC Gold Passes -- $8.25 entry anytime, including the first week after a movie release. Even with the $3 3D surcharge, the price comes down to $11.25. Not great but I'll take it. *sigh* )

Laundry. Putter. Dishes. Vacuum. Other random housework.

DS is up. He has homework in three classes -- two new assignments, plus the paper that he failed because he didn't follow instructions. I tell DS to get his work finished, then we'll spend the evening at the movies.

Seven hours of creative procrastination later, no homework is done. I blow my top while secretly heaving a sigh of relief. I don't want to see Star Wars. I wonder if I can convince him to invite a guy or girl friend.

Homework. We decide to do his health assignment. As it turns out, DS is required to do this assignment with a parent. How they can arbitrarily assign me homework, I don't know. But I have to say that this is an entertaining assignment. DS and I have to compare notes on dating -- what kinds of places are good for dates, what kinds of girls he'd like to date, how to date on a budget, rules for dating. (He proposes "Nothing more than hand-holding." I find this cute and so naive. Mostly cute, though.) DS gets an imaginary $15 budget and has to come up with an interesting date for a girl he likes. Good luck with that, DS. He ends up with ice cream at Baskin Robbins, plus a romantic walk and talk. Not bad.

I am really tired now, so I tell DS to call his Dad for help with writing up his physics lab. DS and the ex are in conference for an hour or so, while I lie around and try to think of other ways to use the ex to lighten my load. Heck. I've been doing everything for DS for years. Let his Dad do something for a change.

Grocery store for quick dinner fixins for DS. I run into a senior lady who teaches me a trick for picking up wet produce without getting my hands wet. She is so delighted to share her wisdom that I don't tell her I've known this trick for decades. Eh. It never hurts to take a minute to listen to others.

Since I'm at the grocery store already, I finish shopping for the week. This is a bad mistake, since I am sooooo hungry. I buy all the things I love but should probably avoid -- bread, cheese, wine, potatoes, rice, pasta, sausages. Plus cookies, chips, and candy, ostensibly for DS but well. Ya know. Plus Kroger has a "quarter back" sale, where they give you a twenty-five cent rebate for every participating item you buy. This is bad news for a food hoarder like me. I buy many random items that I don't need or have any space to store. Good times! *grin*

Home. Bed. I wanted to help DS fix his failing paper today, but I just can't do anything else right now. Tomorrow will have to do. Looks like Star Wars may be off the menu, again tomorrow.

so glad a rough day ended so well

Though...I don't particularly want to see the 3D version.

I saw it in the movies when it first came out. Twice. I've seen it in various versions on TV and on video. I've seen trailers and video games based on the show. I've read cheesy knock-off graphic novels and kids' books based on the movie. I've assembled Lego sets based on the movie. I've watched sequel and prequel animated series.

And I'm half sick.

I don't want to see Stars Wars (this weekend, at least.) I think my time is better spent relaxing. Let DS go see it with some other teenage boy who'll be thrilled by the whole 3D thing.

Never underestimate the capacity of your kids to make you tired of a very good thing. You'll see one day, L.

I already bought the movie passes, L. So, at this point, I'm thinking I'll buy them a theater gift card to cover their other expenses, and let DS meet a friend or two at the mall and have a fun afternoon, just for the guys. They're old enough (13, 14, 15.)

I can go get a massage and a mani/pedi while I wait.

An afternoon off. Definitely worth the fifty bucks.

Convinced myself that I HAD to go to circuit training and to stop stalling reading the morning paper.
Went to training, had a good time with trainer - knowing I was going to be sore.
Home - DH and I walk 2 miles at park - feels like early spring - goregous.
Home - DH makes lunch, we head off to Macy's for last minute cruise items.
Home - Take calls from Step-Dad..hmmmmm....health is slowly going downhill more.
Watch movie with DH.
Receive news of the passing of Jill Kinmont Booth....heart stops a bit, sniffle, sigh.
DH tries to distract me with other things. I so appreciate him at the oddest of times.
DH starts conversation about "bucket list" for my retirement...and I'm having no part of it...poor him.
go to bed earlier than normal.

I have fallen a bit behind, but I have excuses! The last few days have been crazy!

WEDNESDAY:
Typical day.

8:20--Drop off Child.

9:10--Great Works II. Frankenstein.

10:20--Postcolonial Literature. Oral report about Nigeria by Team 1. Teach Joy of Motherhood.

Lunch/prep.

12:40--British Novels II. Bleak House.

1:45-2:45--Office hours. Several customers, one of whom follows me to my car so we can keep talking. It is also snowing. Running a little late.

3:13--Am late to pick up Child for first time in seven years and she rips into me about how it was "SO embarrassing." I tell her I am doing my best, and that I am sorry, but also that I think it is a little unfair for her to be this angry without even giving me a chance, especially given that this is the first time this has happened. She apologizes for her harsh words, and I apologize for being late.

Her dance classes for the afternoon are cancelled b/c it is snowing. This is something of a relief.

That evening after dinner, put in 6 miles on treadmill, my last pre-competition workout. :) Shower.

Husband interrupts workout to tell me good news: Child got qualifying verbal score on the SCAT! (This is an above-grade level mini-SAT like exam kids take to get into the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth summer programs.) YAY! He gets her signed up for Writing Workshop: Modern Fantasy.
