    Competing for our first time

A couple more things - make sure you're in the ballroom at least 1/2 hr before your heat - sometimes they are running ahead of schedule. - take time to warm up before you dance - there should be a practice floor - practice in your competition clothes before the day of the event. And, as...

NDCA Requires Pro/Am Students to Register

DH and I have competed a few times in NDCA competitions. The rules page said we had to be registered with NDCA, so we submitted our registration fee and got our cards ahead of when the competition was held. I don't remember if the comp registrar actually asked to see our cards or not. They...

    Tango questions, please help!

Some music we were discussing in our USA Dance chapter a couple of weeks ago: BALLROOM STANDARD Horchat Hai Caliptus by Alabina (Waltz) Seeking Serenity by Nicholas Gunn (Waltz) Pa' Bailar by Bajofondo (Tango) Tango by Zade (Tango) Something Better to Do by Olivia Newton-John (Foxtrot) Gettin'...

    ballgown cleaning

Thanks for the all the tips here. I finally got brave enough last weekend to wash my ballgown - used the pillowcase in the washer method. I lost about 15 stones, and glued them back on with E6000, except for the two that I couldn't figure out where they were supposed to go.

How to get the perfect chignon bun?

You can also make the hairpins stay by putting them in so that one hairpin crosses over another that's already there. I put a hairpin in my bun so that it attaches the bun to the hair near my scalp - then I put a second hairpin going about 30 degrees off from the first one, crossing over it -...

How Do You Keep Satin Shoes Clean? (clean dancing shoes)

Grandma's Spot Remover - comes in a small bottle with a drop applicator tip - blue cap. (I get it at the fabric store or at Michael's). Put the liquid directly on the dirty spots, scrub with a sponge and rinse off.

    Ankle Strengthening Exercises??

I hurt my ankle this winter. Physical therapist suggested both the calf raises (raising up on the toes then slowly lowering), and balancing on one foot - particularly if you can stand on something "unstable" like a pillow, working up to balancing on a bosu board, I think they're called. All...

When is the new USADance Proficiency Point Limit Becoming Effective?

Yep - we have points listed as having been earned in 2008 Nationals. They are listed in the same events for which we are listed for the 2009 Nationals, with the same number of points for each class as earned in 2009. I've looked up several people, and if you look at points listed as 2008...

When is the new USADance Proficiency Point Limit Becoming Effective?

I saw the same thing, Meagan. We had not yet started competing at the 2008 Nationals, but we have database points. I assume these will get fixed. In our case, it's not really enough points to really worry about one way or the other.

    2010 Mid-Atlantic Championships (USADance)

Thanks to all the organizers for a great competition. Very friendly volunteers - deck captains, the folks on the door and the registration desk, everyone. Last night's championship dancing was just spectacular.

When is the new USADance Proficiency Point Limit Becoming Effective?

Check out the points database on the USADance website I was just on the USADance website - they have a beta version of their points tracker linked to the website now. They counted points for all heats (i.e., each 2-dance event in a given level counts as points for that level).

    Helping Out Beginning Dancers

A lot of our social dancing is with our local USADance chapter. We (the USADance members) offer a beginner lesson before each dance. We aren't pros and we aren't teachers, but providing a lesson in the first couple of basic figures so that people will actually get on the floor and dance is...

    Virginia State Dancesport Championships 2008

The Virginia State Championships also include single dance categories on the Amateur entry form - that's what we're doing, rather than try to have more than one dance ready. There's a separate entry form for Amateurs than for the Pro/am - and the Pro/am includes student/student. All of the...

    Virginia State Dancesport Championships 2008

Thank you for the welcome and good wishes. I'm busily reading all the past threads on first competitions, makeup, hair, costumes (newer info on the website says costumes allowed in all amateur events). Connie
