    Key West Dancing

How jealous I am that you are going for November! We have to wait until April. We go every year, and I can say with pretty good confidence that to find an actual ballroom dance venue, you would have to head north to at least Marathon, if not all the way to Key Largo or Miami. On Key West...

    Conflicting Information Between Coaches

I have to say, this kind of thing happens all the time. We are with instructors now who are very comfortable with the idea that different people teach things different ways, and I've learned a lot about how to process the conflicts. I'm going to agree with what everyone else has said but chime...

    Result v Improvement

Winning is nice. I like to win. Winning can be an important validation of progress, especially if you are able to compare yourself against relatively consistent populations (i.e. Ohio results each year, perhaps). But winning/losing is inherently an external result. It is far more important...

$10 for 10 minutes with a Pro at Social Dance Functions - Good Idea?

Very interesting. My initial concern would be whether the pros would start feeling like "dime a dance" guys and girls. However, I would definitely pay $30 for 30 minutes, as Fasc said, to dance socially with a pro that is not mine; it would give me some concentrated time to dance with a leader...

    2 1/2in or 3in. heels???

ChaChaChaCat, I'm going to give you a break here and suggest that not everything that hurts on us is attributable to age. I am 5'7" but also wear a street size 6 shoe. I wear 3 and 3.5 inch street heels on a daily basis, but that is when I can kick them off, sit at a desk, etc. For dancing, I...

how are your lessons going? thread II

Just be sure to use proper snow blower technique. Think of it as comp practice. :-)

    Group Class with No Rotation

It doesn't always work out that you can do this with finesse, but if you find yourself paired with the aforementioned feather virgin, you can always approach another couple you know and say, "We're having a bit of trouble with this bit; would you switch partners with us for a few minutes since...

how are your lessons going? thread II

Ah, yes. Otherwise known as, "Here's something new that will really put you over the top for comp, and which you have only a 50% chance of being able to execute in the heat of the moment. Good luck."

    Dreaming about Dancing

Had a dream during a nap the other day. I am the director of education for a small college, and I dreamed that I decided to dance for the students as their Christmas present. I went out into our atrium area wearing a costume that was basically asymmetrical copper-colored fringe, held on with...

The Weirdest Floor You've Danced On?

Lots of brick, for some reason. Probably will dance on a weirdly sloping brick patio (with a drainage grate in the middle of it) this New Year's. Favorite place to dance, period, is on the brick patio area just outside El Meson de Pepe in Key West, overlooking Mallory Square, at sunset. In...

    Dipping at Social Dances

I love dips in theory. I will request that DH dip me socially, and I'm all about lessons in which pro and I do dips. There is perhaps one other man in our circle that I enjoy a dip from. However, in practicality, I hate dips socially. The problem is that there are so many variables that...

You Know you are Addicted to Dancing when...

You walk away from DH, only to realize he is still speaking to you, so you turn back to pay attention. The first thing he says is, "Nice heel turn."

    the voices in your head

Just a small sharing of the glee in a forum where people will understand: Last week, the voices in my head came out my mouth during a lesson, when for the first time, I said, "I can TOTALLY DO THIS!!!"

how are your lessons going? thread II

Heh. I know the feeling, Wooh. I always like to say that DH and still stink at dancing, but we're stinking up higher and higher level material all the time. IRT lessons, let's just say that an hour of foxtrot walks and chasses, done properly, can really be *felt* the next day....

    bags and totes

LOL! And I'm allowed to laugh; I'm a Hoosier by birth and upbringing. [/OT] I carry the Capezio Jr. Pro (I think) dance bag, and it will hold everything. I second the idea of just putting a nice satellite purse in there and using that during the day, and leave the primary bag under the desk.
