What is important for ladies in a dance?

Actually, I'd say that leaders may have the impression that the follower is leading themselves, but this happens (in my experience anyway) when the lead is unclear or delivered late. It has absolutely nothing to do with the follow wanting more variety. Speaking as an advanced follow, I don't...

What is important for ladies in a dance?

Can I give a minus score for variety so I have extra points to allocate to things that actually matter to me?

    Whining Thread #2

And as expected, he's just realized he's away this weekend competing and can't fit me in before he goes  I may burst holding this one in until next week. I've already been holding it for a month because I didn't want to do it immediately pre-comp...

    Whining Thread #2

Pro just cancelled today's lesson saying he'd call me later to reschedule. Darn. I was all geared up for the discussion. And I can't make my second one this week because of a late work meeting. Is the universe trying to tell me something?

Ouch. My sympathies. Pro drama sucks. Currently dreading my post-comp discussion with pro next week, so I have some sense of where your brain is at... I laid the foundation for my chat on the plane back, and am not sure how he's going to take the "this is where I am headed, you let me know if I...

Tips for making hair last 2 days

I like a tighter-than-normal bun with fewer or no front piece swirls for maximum looking-perfect-for-days power (think just slicked back with a fancy bun). I also find high hair easier to sleep in because I sleep on my back.

Tips for making hair last 2 days

A generous amount of gel and lots of hairspray. Sleeping in a silk scarf helps too... but basically, if your hair is tight enough and you use enough pins and spray, it'll stay put. Just plan on 10-15 mins in the morning to touch it up a bit. And if you're nervous about it, test drive it the...

    pre-competition disorder

Update: My nails are pink. I think that this is an excellent choice.

how are your lessons going? thread II

Ugh, rounds with a headache... on the upside, I didn't die. And I now know that if I feel like doing nothing but lying down in a cool, dark, quiet room and being unconscious on comp day I can gut out successive rounds that are "not bad at all"... so, yay? (Totally could have done without...

    Happy and/or Random Thoughts #3

OMG, yes to this statement (though I don't call myself "elite"): "The life of an elite athlete is a balancing act: it’s a thin line between doing everything to be the best and tipping over into obsession that can lead to depression or other mental-health problems. It's hard to be constantly...

    pre-competition disorder

The pre-comp nitpicking/bickering has begun right on schedule. Thank goodness I now know that this is just pro's pre-comp mode... it used to stress me out so much. In typical me fashion, current preoccupation is dress choice and hairstyle :)

What to stretch and what to strengthen

Hyper body awareness is my random and completely useless superpower. I regularly wow my chiropractor by naming the location that needs to be adjusted (by vertebra number) and explaining the direction required. Apparently, that ability is not normal... but I had no idea that not everyone could...

What to stretch and what to strengthen

God, if someone has the secret formula, please share!!! This has been a journey that I have been on for years. Things that are usually too tight: right interior ankle, right calf (generally my small flexor muscles, the large ones are fine), QL (both sides), and lately, my left quad Things...

I still can't access the site using the link w/o the hyphen... when it moved to a new server, did only dance-forums move?

Two messages in two days on different dresses I have up for sale. If even one of them sells, I'll be in a much better position to include a major US comp this year... (Now, if only we could start getting partner messages too...)

Dance Shoe Rentals for New Floor

I like a fast floor too. Shoe brushing happens rarely while the shoes are new or the floor is freshly refinished... but as I don't wear my good shoes on questionable floors, they don't tend to pick up gunk. I would have no issue with a studio that required dance shoes and heel protectors. And...

how are your lessons going? thread II

High level of reminding has continued... and admittedly, I have not been confident the last couple of weeks that pro will remember the choreo, direction tweaks we've made, new timing, my position (I have had to repeatedly remind him that I need more space than he is giving me with his right...

Where do you buy your competition dresses from?

With one exception, I've made every dress that I have ever competed in. The sole exception I purchased used from a dancer on the other side of the country from ballroomdancers.com @UKTenDancer is right that most regular competitors (pros included) have dressed for sale - if there's someone at...

Pants or skirts for standard lesson or practice?

I generally wear long full practice skirts for standard lessons and always do for coachings. Doing this gives me the feel of a competition dress so I am not thrown off by having it wrap around my legs, get caught on my shoes, etc. I also feel like appropriate attire is a sign of respect for...

how are your lessons going? thread II

Whine alert Second consecutive lesson where FF spends a large chunk of time (re)teaching her pro their choreography, and explains some pieces he didn't get in detail (timing, alignments, his steps, etc.). I know I was off sick for a while, and have been restricted in what I can do when I have...
