The job of a comp registrar

Basically, what does the job entail and how does a person become one?

What ballroom books do you recommend?

I watched the youtube video on this and was wondering about the book as well. Thanks for posting!

What are you excited about in your dancing right now?

The month of May was a whirlwind for me. I performed in three showcases and competed in a local comp. The event that stood out to me was a performance at a fundraising event in front of a few hundred people at an upscale hotel. This was the largest crowd for whom I've ever performed. I work in a...

    Go Pro or Stay Am?

A couple of times I've seen people write that a pro competitive career is short. I guess I'm not really understanding why this is or why people are saying it is.

    Go Pro or Stay Am?

I have an acquaintance (we have mutual friends) who has her own business as a dietician, but she competes in the professional division. I think she teaches, but it's minimal - maybe a class or two and maybe a few private students. My point is, competing as a professional doesn't mean you have to...

Keeping competition earrings on - advice!

I had an exhibition performance last night at a charity event with several hundred people - my first ever. I found cute tassel earrings and did NOT want them fall off during the performance. I used pencil erasers and eyelash glue - they didn't budge. Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

    Choosing a style; specialization; FOMO

Just to close the loop, we decided that we will compete in standard, but we're going to keep 1-2 days a week of latin practice. Our coach said that if we ever want to come back to it, it's good to at least maintain the latin movements/coordination in regular practice. He also indicated that it...

Heh...yeah. I know that thread. It quite literally changed my life. I may go back and reread.

My student wants a classicAL waltz for a showcase

I love this song. It's going to be the "first dance" for my fiance and I at our wedding :-D.

    Choosing a style; specialization; FOMO

I really appreciate your thoughts - thank you. I'm sure your questions are rhetorical, but I thought I would answer them anyway :). My goals right now are to compete at championship level and to compete in Europe a few times in the next five years. It will require some sacrifices and careful...

Dancing financial support in other countries

I watch a good amount of WDSF dancing on youtube (for better or for worse) and I'm very curious: does anyone know if amateur dancers in other countries receive support from governments or perhaps organizations they are a part of? Or are they like the United States, where pretty much all dancers...

Intimidated by people watching me practice

I agree! Teachers are expensive; if yours watches you outside of paid time, take advantage :-D. I'm still self-conscious sometimes, but I have to get over myself in order to improve. One of my coaches said her teacher had hooks outside the studio and one of them was named, "ego." He told all...

    Dance teachers in Denver

One of my teachers coached Tony and Melody Munroe in Littleton, CO for a time. I don't know anything about their studio or classes personally, but both of them seem experienced in all styles. Their studio is Colorado Dancesport.

    burnout: causes and timeline

Like Purr mentioned, I wonder if the underlying sadness is with something else...like a general feeling of unfulfillment, but it is affecting your views on and commitment to dancing. A break sounds like a great idea...where you can do some exploration of things that get you excited and feeling...

How do you eat before a comp/ showcase?

I try to eat as little as possible on competition days, i.e. just enough to sustain me. Adrenaline usually gives me energy on the floor, lol. Usually, I tend to live on yogurt and fruit and then eat a decent dinner.

    Boyko hair and makeup

I have naturally curly hair and I straighten it every time I work with a stylist. I don't think any of them used gel - just a lot of hairspray and combing. Sometimes I wince when I think about the stress on my hair (the straightening and styling) but this is the life I signed up for and it's...
