    Clothes for a first competition

Hey everybody, thank you for your excellent input! I'll talk to them about shoes and we can definitely work on hair and makeup. I'm confident with comp makeup; hair, less so (my own hairstyle is a short pixie cut so I typically just shove a rhinestone pin in it, crop-dust with hairspray, and...

    Clothes for a first competition

One thing that is not a direct answer to this question but might help: check the USA Dance rules and/or the rules for that specific comp to see what's allowed in your age group. When I was still young enough to dance in Adult (sob!), stoning was not allowed in that age group per the USAD dress...

    Clothes for a first competition

Hello Dance Forums! It's been a minute (as they say here in the South). My husband and I have seduced/peer-pressured/browbeaten 2 couples into coming along with us to compete at Royal Palm Winter Frolic in Ft. Lauderdale in January. It's a small one-day USA Dance competition. This would be the...

How to get musty/mildew odor out of a dress?

Hi everybody! Haven't posted or read in ages but I need some expert help. Recently I've bought a couple of Latin/Rhythm dresses on clearance from an overseas company. They must have been in storage for a while or something because they both have a noticeable musty/mildew odor (but no visible...

    Atlanta Dance Classic 2011

Tibor, I just wanted to say that it was cool to see you dance last weekend after seeing your posts here on DF so many times. You (and your partners) are awesome!

What I Learned At My Last Comp

To just cough up the appalling sum and stay at the comp hotel, because the convenience is worth it. Otherwise, all free time is spent shuttling between 2 locations. I have supposedly "learned" this lesson about 4 times now but somehow it hasn't stuck. (>_<)

    Wedding dance suggestions--"Best Friends" theme

You guys are so good! I am passing these on to our friends. Thank you so much! TC, I'm trying to think if I've ever heard "Friend Like Me" played at a competition. On the comp floor you need all the fun, high-energy music you can get!

    Wedding dance suggestions--"Best Friends" theme

I'd forgotten about "Friends and Lovers"! You guys rock. TC, you're right about the Tim McGraw song. I was hearing the tempo wrong before. Maybe the real problem is that I don't particularly like the song? And we don't know NC2S at all, unfortunately. The couple originally met when she was...

    Wedding dance suggestions--"Best Friends" theme

DF brain trust, can you help me come up with song suggestions? My husband and I are helping a couple of friends prepare for their first dance as husband and wife and they want a song with a "friendship" or "best friends" theme. Their first choice was "You're My Best Friend" by Tim McGraw...

    Rising Star Newcomers Circuit

My husband and I have competed am/am at a couple of RSF competitions and been able to pay a flat rate comparable to USA Dance comps' entry fees. So far there is not a lot of amateur participation in RSF but the comps are always a fun atmosphere and you get to dance a lot of heats. It sounds...

Looking for "Music Machine" software or similar

Thanks, Larinda and thanks everybody who chimed in on the tempo/pitch thing. I hadn't thought about it in those terms so I'm glad to know that the "Pitch" adjustment on this software does what we would want it to do. More proof that DF rocks! :notworth:

Looking for "Music Machine" software or similar

Everybody, thank you for your recommendations, information, and help! I'm glad to have some options to investigate.

Probably not that important, really. I will check out your recommendation. Thank you!

Looking for "Music Machine" software or similar

My husband/partner would like to buy the "Music Machine" software that our pro has at his studio and we've seen at other studios. It is a touch-screen system that allows you to categorize songs by what dance they are and also to alter tempo--I suspect that maybe it comes with songs already...

Response to Current Trends in American Smooth

As half of a Silver-level amateur couple I'm about as far from a pro competitor as it's possible for a person to be. But if "performing for the audience" is wrong, I don't want to be right. To me, going out there and "selling" our dancing is part of competition just like technique...

What I Learned At My Last Comp

What I learned just by looking at the pictures of Smooth heats from my last comp: -- I appear to be split-weight and flat-footed WAY too often. -- I have long legs but I'm not using 'em. -- In related news, I also have knees, but I'm not using those either. -- My partner is breaking forward at...

How much did your Supadance shoes stretch?

+1. I also wear 1403 and have found that they stretch a good bit, especially if I sweat a lot. My current pair is a 5 (I wear 8 or 8.5 in a street shoe) but I am going to try a 4.5 next time.

    practice hold

It depends on how annoyed I am at the time. Hee. Very little pressure is needed. Your arm is just propped there; I think I am more conscious of trying to stretch away from it than of pressing it down/in at all.

    practice hold

My partner/husband's biggest frame problem is that he tends to lead with his forehead and right side so he's often too close to me à la Dirty Dancing ("This is my dance space; this is your dance space"). To correct that issue our pro advised us to practice with my right arm propped over his...
