    DanceSport Documentaries/History

@Arun Garg thank you for sharing that link to 'Dancing Up a Storm at Blackpool.' Fun to watch.

    Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

I'm half way* thru 'Hail Mary'. Really enjoying it. :) My favorite is Rocky's comments about Grace's housekeeping while acting like a bull in a china shop. LOL. I love SciFi but the most amusing bits are not even SciFi, more like a buddy road trip. (* I just watch short bits of tv each...

    Rideshare at Embassy?

Hi @Quickandslow, there is Prime Time Shuttle, from $67.83 and up, from LAX to Embassy's hotel. For up to 3 passengers. Book at "prime time shuttle .com" (without spaces). Wow time flies. Embassy is almost here. Have a great comp.

    Can we talk dresses?

I think of "handkerchief hem" as one big square with only four points, or corners, in the whole hem line. The jagged-edged hem is many points/corners.

    Can we talk dresses?

I noticed a new hemline in standard gowns, in particular the gold gown in Blackpool Amateur Ballroom Finals has an angular (like VVVVV) tailored hem. I wonder if the poof-hem is going out of fashion. Gosh I sure hope not because I love the hemlines that billow out with horsehair or feathers or...

    Can we talk dresses?

To me, I see the random-placement as "sparkle". Less another pattern and more "sparks". Though I also like the suggestion of a second, smaller, contrasting stone to outline to give depth. And I love that blue color of the fabric. I also agree do whatever makes you feel fabulous. Thank you for...

    Standard Geekery

Totally agree. I was going to mention tension in the WCS context but this thread's title... ;) Although... I think there are times I feel tension in the topline, like when we "breathe out", or in 2 of a Nat Spin. Or on the fullest extension moment of an outside swivel.

    Standard Geekery

Maybe "charging" refers to a compression. Whereas "wind-up" can refer to torsion, with the release of the potential energy stored in the torsion creating rotational movement, the release of the potential energy stored in compression would create linear movement. Compression in partner...

Any tips to finding a (follower) partner as a "perpetual beginner" for 17.5 years?

Hi @NeveraPartner, I hear you. Several knowledgeable and I presume skilled dancers have replied but what I'm reading in those replies is they want to change you. I say you are just fine the way you are. I admire your courage to share with the forum your truth, your difference from the usual...

Sprucing up my Standard gown - sewing questions!

Yes I agree that is optimal. I did that for a dress back in 2022. It turned out nice.

Sprucing up my Standard gown - sewing questions!

I finished putting the ruffle on the white dress last week but forgot to post a pic. I'm undewhelmed by the limited amount of floof created. I opted for a 3:1 gathering ratio but rather than tightly gather, I did a pleat. The ruffle I was using was cut off a 3-tiered belly dance skirt. The top...

Sprucing up my Standard gown - sewing questions!

I "pinned" (clipped with tiny plastic clips because pins & chiffon don't play well together). I photographed. Really hard to get a good pic since there's so much clutter abounding. But the conclusion is solid: None of the above! The actual winner is to gather the 3 layers down to 3:1 length...

Sprucing up my Standard gown - sewing questions!

Brilliant! Yes I can use opposite sides of the underskirt.

Sprucing up my Standard gown - sewing questions!

No new posts on this thread since 2020? Hope it's ok to add an almost-on-topic question. I'm modifying a simple practice dress to use in a comp where costumes are allowed but half the ladies will not be wearing real gowns. The practice dress itself hangs straight down with no floof or flare. I...

    LA/SGV Dance Studio Suggestions?

I can vouch for the Dance Around the Clock in Monrovia. My partner and I used to commute hours to go there. One of the few places with group standard classes. The rounds are well run. Big floor.

    How are your practices going?

Should we start a thread on The Challenges of Securing Standard Practice Space? As I moaned a couple months ago, the close-by gym with the lovely floor ended their lease. I tried to use that floor every day up through their last day and appreciated it more knowing it was not going to last. But...

    How are your practices going?

Ukky update: The gym with the lovely dance floor that made me soooo happy when they re-opened use of the floor, has just announced they're closing the whole gym Dec 30. Booo. Now I need to rally enthusiasm to keep using the nice floor while it's still available, perhaps even appreciate it more...

    How are your practices going?

THAT. Sooo true. Rounds are fun, and fun is essential. But that's exactly what happened at my solo practice last night at the lovely floor I just returned to. All that space, it just begged for rounds. I did do a tiny bit of technique (lowering with control). And I did review the new timing...

    How are your practices going?

Happy News :) The beautiful spacious floor at a local gym has finally reopened for dance practice. Cue the vintage 'Happy Days are Here Again' melody. A couple years back when they closed it off to us we all lost out on the remainder of that year's membership dues but what saddened me most...

    2024 Competition Opportunities

Not going to travel to Chicago but I'll add my vote for Adult Solo Starz at comps. As for whether it is mixed with couples, that does not make it any more hazardous than all solo. Couple years back when we used to go to The Big City to do more realistic rounds, my partner often opted out of VW...
