    Ballroom Dance Books

Can anybody recommend any good ballroom dance books with pictures and floor diagrams? Preferably intermediate american style. The best book I've bought is "Dance Class" by Paul Bottomer, but it mostly deals with international steps. I also own a copy of "The Complete Idiot's Guide to...

Dancing With the Stars--Get Me Rewrite!

I kept on waiting for Evander to headbutt his partner like he seemed to do to most of his opponents in the ring :P

Did A TV Show or Movie Spark Your Interest In Dancing?

I have to admit that the movie "Swingers" helped influance me to take lessons. It's not really a dance movie, but one of the ways the main star of the movie eventually gets the girl is by dancing with her. All his friends that watched had no idea he knew any of that stuff and they were...

    A Change in Dancing.

Woah, lots of good questions. I'm gonna try to tackle one or 2 of them. The best way to avoid getting a dance position you don't want to be in, is not getting in it in the first place. It's pretty much up to the guy to initiate dance holds and stuff. Just put your left hand up to the left...

    Dance Notes

I was going through my ballroom/latin dance notebook that's full of all the steps and routines I've learned over the years and I was wondering if there's a "standard" way of actually writing these things down. Going through different websites I've noticed that everyone seems to do things...

Teaching followers to dance with less experienced leaders

As a leader I personally like to know if something is wrong with my lead, especially if it's causing discomfort for someone. If a follower acts like nothing was wrong at all, then it doesn't help me improve and I'll keep on doing it and possibly end up hurting someone else doing the exact...

    Beer & Ballet Video

I found this link to a video of a commercial on a website titled "Beer & Ballet". I find it very funny although some may find it a bit inappropriate, but I hope you enjoy. http://walker.depot.com.au/darrinh/Ballet_C.wmv

    Online Dance Videos--Any favorite websites?

here's a nice website I found recently with a bunch of videos I've downloaded. Not all of them seem to work though. http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~prufrock/movies/

What makes for a great merengue?

haha.. yeah I guess that would work. Not exactly the type of "fun" I had in mind at the time, but yep, it'll do.

What makes for a great merengue?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think my hip movement/cuban motion isn't bad, but I guess I just need to learn more moves, and be more creative in putting them together. I have to agree with a lot of you though, that so far I just don't really like merengue. I just don't really find it...

What makes for a great merengue?

I've been taking dance lessons for about 3 years and still haven't gotten the hang of merengue while doing well in other dances. I'm not really sure why a dance which is usually considered easy is frustrating and difficult for me. I think I'm making it seem much harder than it should be. I...

    I need kid songs...

Here are some songs from kids movies off the top of my head: Colors of the Wind (Vanessa Williams) from Pocahontas- Rumba A Whole New World (Peabo Bryson) from Aladdin - Rumba Friend Like Me (Robin Williams) from Aladdin - Quickstep It Is You (Dana Glover) from Shrek - Waltz You...

    Bad Etiquette :(

The thing that probably annoys me the most is if somebody just compleatly ignores me while dancing. There's one girl I've encountered a few times who was always trying to talk to one of her girlfriends while dancing with me, doesn't make any sort of eye contact, and doesn't even say a simple...

    Tap Step in WCS

I've only been taking WCS for about 2 months and we're being taught the tapstep in moves such as the whip. At the same time though, our instructor is mentioning that it's interchangable with a triplestep, and that the triple is becoming more popular these days.

    Dancing in Showcases

I'm in the same situation myself. I consider myself just a social dancer but am always begged to do things like showcases and spotlight dances. I think it'd cost about $80 to sign up for one, and I don't really think it's worth it because I'd have to use lessons to prepare for it also. I'm...

    Do you work out?

I do weight training at the gym, and have been doing so before dancing. Dance however has replaced a lot of my cardio workouts. Dance however has hurt my workout routine a bit because I don't work out my legs as much so they're not sore for dance.

    Dancing with non-dancers

I'll usually just wait for a dance that has an easy basic such as a rumba and teach it to her real quick. If she catches on real fast I'll explain the next thing I want to do, and try it if she doesn't tell me not to. A lot of people are able to go with it with enough warning. But in general...

    Family Support for Dancing

I haven't told my parents yet and I've been taking lessons for over 2 years. I just know that they'll say I'm just wasting money and I don't need to deal with any hassle from them. But it makes me happy and that's all that matters.

    any other Arthur Murray students?

Wow, sounds like you guys really hate this festival stuff. It seems like I'm the only person at my studio that's not into it at all. I can't see myself spending extra money just so a studio does better in thier money making competition when I'm already spending a fortune and don't really get...

    any other Arthur Murray students?

I'm been an AM student for over 2 years now, and yes we're going through the whole "international dance festival" stuff right now for I think 6 weeks. I think the customer service there is alright, I haven't really been treated too badly. If anything I agree with the aggressive sales pitch...
