I would like to learn dancing, but I have trouble picking up the rhythm of songs. I know rhythm is inherent to dancing, but I am inspired by a friend of mine who said that he did not pick up the rhythm of songs for many months, but he kept at it and kept at it, slowly worked on his dancing and finally one day everything 'clicked' and he is now able to pick up rhythm easily.
My question is, what would be the best form of dancing to learn for a beginner, that is least reliant on picking up the rhythm of the song?
I've done a bit of research and it has come down to Ceroc vs Swing (Salsa, Tango seem to be heavily reliant on rhythm, I would like to learn Ballroom dancing at a later stage, so that too is out).
What would you recommend? Ceroc? or Swing? or another form?
Netmatrix84: Ceroc for sure. I'm talking from experience because I have been doing it for 15 years. It is the easiest of the dance to do as a beginner, but like all instruments is hard to do as you get better, plus you can do it to modern music if you go out anywhere (you can't do it to 3/4 music but those songs are rare. After doing ceroc a long time I went to a Lindy Hop lesson and had a fabulous time, could do it so easily because it was like fitting into a glove with plenty of ceroc experience.
I think Lindy was a bit harder but felt the best. I just sadly couldn't keep going because I had to drive for a hour to get to it. I was a real pity and I still would love to do more of it because with all my ceroc experience Lindy Hop a real buzz, like walking on air.
The basic ceroc steps are just back and forward which makes it super easy to start at then you learn more advanced things as time goes on. Lindy may be easy to start on I don't know. I would start on Ceroc then go to Lindy.
Better than that, go to a beginner's lessons of both to see which you like the most. I will only take a couple of nights, or do both. I wish I had your options. I would be at Lindy Straight away if it was near me because I think it is so fun.
Ceroc is a derivative of Lindy really so they're not much different.
So my rather educated answer is Ceroc will be a bit easier so try that for sure first and be very sure to try Lindy a bit later, or learn both together on different nights and make your own decision after a while, or continue doing both. (I would continue doing both if I could; Ceroc is also very enjoyable.)
If you do both or try one or the other later on you will probably find out what I found: a lot of the people at the Lindy lesson are the same people as at the ceroc lesson; then you learn after a while it is a lot of the same people at other dance lessons in your area too and that and that dancing is really a society in an area that people don't know about until they join it, and really a society worldwide. I am talking from Sydney, Australia.
PS, The big thing and advice about dancing is you don't have two left feet. You may like feel like that in the first couple of months, but you will pick it up like anything else if you give it up a couple of months then one day at a dance think, "wow I'm picking this up, I didn't think I would" and it is all smooth sailing from there.
Good luck and happy dancing!
