Favorite Music

I've had certain orchestras relegated to the back of my CD rack because I didn't enjoy them as much as others. Over the years some CDs have become more popular with me, so they've crept toward the front, and vice versa. Sometimes I discover a CD in the back that I really enjoy, and I wonder why it had been lost over time. I guess my tastes change. I notice this in iTunes also; the number of stars I give a certain tune gets changed frequently.

Another distinction I've begun to notice is that I may not like recordings of a certain orchestra if they are from the late '40s, but I may really like earlier recordings. I've discovered this recently about Fresedo and Troilo. I know they were popular orchestras, but I didn't find them very enjoyable. That's because I was hearing their later music. When I listened to their earlier music, I had a complete change of opinion.

I do not have a personal collection of tango music as my friends have but just the songs I need for my classes and some more. So I can not comment a personal process but I think there is similar one for DJ playlists. (my video collection is huge; Movement is my prio one in dance)

I have been dancing over 10 years now and one evening the DJ, active during the first years, was DJing. I just stopped dancing when one old favorite after another was played. For some reason these songs were not popular anymore among DJs.

I talked with him later about the changes of played music but he could not say anything about the development of his or others playlists. Nothing about orchrestras or songs changing their posistions on the playlists over time.

No, my experience is different. Im judging very fast: like it or dont like it, and that did not change during my tango existence. I do not stick to a special composer or orchestra, because I know that they were subdued to the rules of the "market" and the fashions. So an orchestra as Canaro went through up to 4 different styles and by the way Canaro produced so much trash through the years. So besides the style of a single piece I always judge it´s quality. Troilo´s productions always have been on a very high level, though his later style paved the way for Tango Fantasia. Though I like the style of Fresedo, the quality of the pieces unfortunately depends on the quality of the material he used.


Right from my tango beginning on I did not like Clubstyle (I use to call it machine gun tango or tango duro) and Fantasia (dramatic orchestral tango) and I always tried to stop dancing when these tandas came. But my disgust gave way to a careful approach. Now I dance to these styles, though I still do not like this music. I find that a tango dancer should cope with all tango (dancing as well as music) styles. But my preferences still are sung italian-style Tango Meloso, Tango Nuevo, and NeoTango.
