The city of BsAs is trying to shut down his milonga in Plaza Dorrego that he has organized for 20 years. There is no reason he should not continue providing culture to the neighborhood.

Reading the petition, it looks like the owners of bars and restaurants around the place want the space for themselves.

While I lived at Defnsa 1111 right next to the Plaza Dorego, I could see parts of El Indio’s weekend performance from my window. At night he offered a free open air Milonga, aimed at young and not so well of people. That might be the problem, as the visitors bring their own Mate and consume next to nothing at restaurants situated at the plaza. When I was there the last time, most of those restaurants were simply out of reach for the dancers on a weekly basis. Nevertheless, the event is an authentic piece of tango culture, not something made up for the tourists. One spot were tango is alive and breathing. If you’ve been there you will know. If you have not seen it, you will bit your own butt for missing this chance. I assume that the noise is no factor, as the Plaza Dorego is always loud. To put up their antique market the Argentinians need all night and I mean all night. Some brass orchestras consider it a sport to give an example of their craft a 2:00 in the morning. Hearing the rather soft sound of Tango was more of a relief to the usual hubhub.

El Indo is a man of many talents. One is to make women melt away in his presence. Another is to inspire and focus social activities. He organizes support for children in the poor regions of Argentina, giving at least some of them access to the school system. I had the honor to perform at one of his events as the canyengue dancing German – as strange as a yodeling Japanese over here. As an entrance fee he asked for school materials and donations. Unfortunately, my Spanish was to bad to understand his speeches at that time. However I think one important aspect was that education and cultural identity is a common good and not a privilege for the rich.​

As Tango is now part of the UNESCO world heritage, one should tell the UNESCO about it.
