La Rumba and other old tangos

I have just acquired a copy of "The Modern Dances" by Caroline Walker (1914) and she particularly recommends "La Rumba" ("one of the most popular Argentine pieces"). Gladys Beattie Crozier in "The Tango and how to dance it" (1913) says: "La Rumba and Amampa, two of the best Tangos written, are recorded on either side of a single gramophone disc, and published at 5s 6d; and one can dance to them in turn for a whole evening."

Clearly a huge hit nearly a century ago. Are any recordings available now?

Hmm, good question! Off the top of my head, the only ones I know for sure exist are El Irresistible, Joaquina, and El Choclo. There's a song performed by De Angelis in the 50's called El Mimoso, but since there are no earlier recordings that I know of, I don't know if it's the same one. Also, if the song Argentine Tango is the same as Tango Argentino, then that's floating around out there as well.

I think Amampa is in fact a Maxixe, a dance form that was often called "Brazilian tango". There is a recording available on the website of the "Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project".
Also from Irresistible by Logatti they have a recording online.

Joaquina is of course a very well known tango, dedicated to Joaquina Marán who owned a dance place. Recordings by D'Arienzo, Canaro and Firpa are available...
