Having watched it again--and the whole video this time, not just the 0:43 bit--I'm not convinced they were actually dancing to that song, which would account for why the dancing doesn't seem to fit the music very nicely. It's hard to tell, though, because of the editing...there were plenty of times where I'd have liked to have seen the pre- and post- [something] to see how it flowed, but it cut away to some other shot.

Regarding the initial move in question, and the turnout in her right leg/foot in particular, it looks to me like she is being turned out in that direction by the lead, in preparation for the next step. It doesn't look to me like it's turnout just as a function of poor/strange technique. It looks to me like he's closing up that angle with his right arm, and turning her out a bit. Which, again, leads me to conclude that what we're seeing is her following what is lead.

Now...the question of liking or not what he's leading...that's a different issue.

I'd be happy to give a complete rundown of everything that I think is wrong with my own dancing, but I'm afraid it would be too long for anyone to want to read.

Yeah, I've had someone record the wife and I dancing a few times. I found so many things wrong, that in the end, I concluded there must have been a problem with the camcorder.

Er...but you don't take a step in AT by keeping your standing leg straight.

No, that's not what I meant. I meant that the extension in a wide/long step comes from straightening the leg after the intial flex, to get the 'push off'. She seems, instead, to flex more and more - and while this may be the direct result of the lead, I still find the result ugly.

Since the step seemed quite low, I thought it would be a longer step than it turned out to be. The guy seemed to truncate it at the final moment, bringing the leading knees past the location of the foot. Her following of the step seemed perfect to me, including even the final truncation.

here is Cristina doing more or less the same move at 3.29. But she looks much more elegant. Is this because her knees always look in the same direction?
