while posters and cards for other venues aren't going to happen because that's advertising for the competition.

Cards or advertising for other events is fairly common at both tango and other social dances here. That is how I come to know, esp about upcoming live music milongas that I love to attend. I am not a social tango creature so word of mouth reach to me is limited. Neither am I on social media, which I thing is one of the worst thing that happened to humanity in context of socialization. For tango we have a well maintained calendar on its own dedicated website. Therefore unlike places where there is no regular updated calendar, it is easy to find what’s going on. When I am visiting, the locals will inform about milongas and practicas when asked or volunteer knowing you are a visitor.

I get the impression that WhatsApp is a thing in Europe. In Canada and the U.S.A., it lags behind. (I have the app, but I've never actually exchanged messages on it, and I receive only spam.)
That’s true. Elsewhere in the world, WhatsApp is used for everything including commerce, making payments, etc. Its messaging features are far better than other messaging apps. telegram comes and signal come close but people don’t use them as much.

In my environment, the organizers are invariably adults - often with an academic background - who need no advice from me regarding their public relations and marketing. Frankly, anyone with great ideas is better off implementing them personally and basking in the resulting success.

So, in my community, we have a recruitment problem, a short-term retention problem and a long-term retention problem!

There is an active and thriving Latin dance community which is driven by a particularly charismatic couple.
Charisma is indispensable for integrating newcomers. If an organizer lacks it, things get really difficult. That is why I am not organizing.

Judging by many I've encountered over the years, albeit in the field of computer systems and software development, they do need advice. Great ideas, but no skills in putting those concepts together, nor developing and marketing. I think PR and marketing will be similar issues to many with that background, even if they don't wish to admit that (I'd take advice from many areas!). There are, of course, exceptions.

There is an interesting interview about the Seoul tango scene. It talks a bit about how they started as a project where salsa dancers went to Argentina and used their existing salsa promotion skills to promote social clubs to learn tango. And how it kinda evolved from there. I have met a few South Korean dancers and they tend to be younger and super technical, so it's interesting to see this evolution that is slightly different than in the US or Europe.

Perhaps the quality is better I suspect. Or easier to get quality dances at the European events.

I know enough followers who go regularly to BsAs and I have danced with a very very few non-instructor followers who are local to BsAs. Neither is a category that I get experience of a good or fulfilling dance.
Yeah, he prefer the way the European women dance. I think he's especially fond of Italians. I've had great dances with women from all sorts of places, including BsAs. It really depends on the individual. I don't think one can make a blanket statement about it.
