Tandas

Hi there,

Can you please advise on tandas? What should the duration of the song for the cortinas be? 10 or 20 or 30 seconds for example? Thank you. I forgot to mention that I was asking about the duration for the cortina song so now it is clear.

I'm not clear on what you are asking for. My two guesses, are that either you are asking how long a tanda should last, in minutes (not seconds), or you might be asking how long a cortina should last, in seconds.

For the length of a tanda, it can vary from 3 to 5 songs (so I suppose anywhere from 8 to 15 minutes). For the length of a cortina, 20 - 45 seconds is a rough guideline, depending on your environment.

I think you have tandas and cortinas confused.

Tandas, are the song played in a set that people dance AT to. Normally 4-5 songs of ~3 minutes each, which gives you ~12-15 minutes of tango per tanda (set)

Cortinas, are the non-tango song played in between tandas as a signal for the partners to break and find new partners. The cortina roughly run~1 minute (60 seconds)

Your question is about the "cortina" which signals the end of a tanda (set of four pieces of music of the same dance (tango, vals or milonga) by the same orchestra of the same year).

The duration of the "cortina" music is determined by the DJ. It should be long enough to clear the floor and for everyone to be seated. Use your discretion in the length according to the number of dancers and the time it takes for them to leave the floor.

Try to find a cortina which isn't danceable. Use the same one throughout the night so that dancers are accustomed to it. You may even want to lower the volume of the cortina music.

:)

Most cortinas in London seem to last around 30-45 seconds for what that's worth.

10 seconds seems way too short to me. But more than 45 seconds, and I want to dance... So I'd go for 30 seconds.

..Cortinas, are the non-tango song played...

@ brasilian

Look out, sometimes non-tango pieces are also played in Tandas! It depends on the location. So it would be pretty to find a piece or a part of music, that works as a token for the change.

The cortina should be long enough, for everybody to get off the dance floor without any pressure and comfortable for the waiters to mover their stuff (getting glasses, delivering trays, putting up additional tables...), but no longer since it interrupts the fun.

I started with using 25-30 sec. cortinas, but since my place is rather small and people are well conditioned, I found that 15-20 sec. are sufficient. 30 seconds or more create an awkward break. I will often use lounge music, as it has good contrast to tango, does not shift the mood and people who don’t know about tandas won’t start to dance immediately.
