Chocolate Thread

The easy way to make hot chocolate from a chocolate bar is to break up the bar into small pieces and put it in the blender. Then heat your milk until it is really hot (but don't boil it!) and pour it in the blender. VERY IMPORTANT: let the hot milk melt the chocolate before you turn the blender on! I broke a blender by not doing this! You only need to wait about three minutes. Then turn the blender on and whip up your hot chocolate into a delicious froth.

wow, that sounds delicious! But it's pretty difficult to cut the chocolates to such small pieces - i tried smashing them with a hammer once and that didn't get me anywhere other than flying chocolate bits everywhere ....

If you want to smash something with a hammer, try putting it in cheesecloth or a clean towel (depending on what you're smashing.)

They don't have to be tiny pieces. Just not big blocks. I like to mash things up in a ziplock bag. I've got a box of those quart-sized freezer bags, and I use them to flatten chicken breasts or smash nuts. Just put the item to be smashed inside, push out as much air as you can, zip them up, and then whack them with the side of a hammer or a meat pounder if you have one.

Usually, though, I just cut up the chocolate with a knife. Put it on a cutting board, use a heavy sharp knife, and just make some cuts. No big whoop.

I think i'll try cutting them next time, I did use a ziploc bag when i was trying to break the bar of chocolate - except the sharp edges of the chocolate poked holes in the bag so i still got pieces of chocolate everywhere.

I haven't had problems with using a kitchen towel. Of course, I haven't been smashing chocolate with a hammer, since I don't much do chocolate.

Actually, I'm thinking that a combination of Ziploc bad and kitchen towel might be perfect.

OK, i will admit i've smashed a couple of things with a hammer (bread crumbs, nuts...etc) - funny enough, i think our hammer spends more time in the kitchen than in the garage !!

Ok, this isn't going to be chocolate milk from Neuhaus chocolate or anything (unless they produce something I don't know about, which is not only possible but likely)...

Why not just use milk chocolate chips? If you are going from Swiss Miss to chocolate milk from actual chocolate, certainly it would please this non-discriminating palate.... Then you don't have to pound anything and I try not to pound anything if I don't have to. LOL

Just the chocolate by itself? Or do you mix it with milk or water or coffee or something else?

I add milk and it's done! Oh yeah, note: when making hot chocolate, I never do it with water. Don't ask why.

Milk tastes better, IMO. The little packets of mix supposedly have dehydrated milk in em, right? (I think they do. :? )

Some do, some don't. I have made the mistake of not reading the instructions on some of the more gourmet ones that don't inlcude powdered milk. Blech

Ooh, i like a good chocolate mousse!! I tried making it with gelatin (or pudding powder??) but it just doesn't taste the same
