Trends in lesson length and scheduling

For those who have lived through the change from 60 or 55 minute lessons to 45... is it commonplace that studios decrease the time but keep the price, or is the price generally adjusted as well? Did the shorter lessons help with scheduling/timing issues? Just wondering if people tend to pick...

    Second style conundrum

Foot was put down about doing 10-dance on the weekend. The conversation went something like: FF: "Next conversation: 10-dance. Are we doing it?" Pro: "I feel like that should come from the student, saying 'Pro, I want to do 10-dance.'" FF's inside voice: WTF. I've been bringing it up...

    Go Pro or Stay Am?

Starting to seriously revisit this line of thinking... turning pro is starting to look like viable option with everything else that's been happening lately. I find myself increasingly wondering if my (purely hypothetical) student's successes would make me happy, because I'm not finding a lot of...

how are your lessons going? thread II

Lessons have resumed. Pro is all enthusiastic and bouncy. FF is decidedly less so, and is still trying to figure out if she can/is willing to continue to work with pro. She does like the choreo changes that have been made to FT and TG. And somehow, her dancing has improved despite...

    Happy and/or Random Thoughts #3

There's nothing quite like compliments on your recent video from random European dancers to perk you up when you're in the dance funks.

How long do dance shoes last?

I replace when I feel the support is going - so when I find that my feet are repeatedly abnormally tired after a normal practice/lesson day. I can sometimes get another month or so out of the shoes by adding insoles (and tried re-sueding soles once), but it doesn't extend the life much and is a...

How long do dance shoes last?

I've ordered replacement soles from supadance before. If memory serves, they offer both tan and black. To save on shipping, I either ordered them with another pair of shoes, or arranged to pick up from the vendor at a comp (I have a thing about paying for shipping. And parking.) But have only...

    Exercise/Diet Support Group

Now that I have changed jobs and lost access to the free gym at work, am mulling over my options. I've eliminated the really-inexpensive options that don't have the equipment I need/like, so am between 2 mid-range options or one higher-end. The higher end one is about $20 a month more than the...

Uncontested heats - how to be sure there will be competition at the competition

Same. Nearly every comp I've been to has this in their rules and no one ever does it. On the pro-am side, it's usually conflicts with the pros that prevents them from doing it - multiple students in multiple levels for multiple pros makes it all very complicated.

    Happy and/or Random Thoughts #3

So random - just came back from a meeting to 2 different messages from people I don't actually know all that well asking if I am doing hair at a comp in a nearby city this weekend. (I'm not.) One followed up asking if I'd do it here before they go. (Maybe. I'll call them after work.) When...

    Whining Thread #2

And now my car needs new brakes. Sigh. Hopefully my kettle dying was the 3rd major repair/replace (because things come in threes)... 'cause I cannot handle another repair/replace that stretches into 4 digits without completely losing my sh*t. Silver lining: the "your brakes are completely...

how are your lessons going? thread II

First lesson back post comp... refreshingly normal. No conversation part 2, no accusations, no crying, no fighting.... just video and excitement, pride and plans (pro) / peeking through fingers and explanations of tipsy weekend video-watching to desensitize (me). Then some fixing of bits...

Best Compliment(s) You've Ever Gotten On Your Dancing

From a pro at my recent comp: "You're a beautiful dancer. We were dancing against you, and I wished we weren't, because I was trying to watch you while we were dancing. Your extension - your head looks like it is going to float away." From another dancer, same comp: "I saw you warming up, and...

how are your lessons going? thread II

You don't need an excuse to do what is right for you. I'm on a break right now. My explanation: "I'm taking the week off. See you next week." (He might not, but that's a whole other story.) The last time I didn't take advantage of a coaching opportunity: "I'm going to pass, but thank you for...

Black Gowns (and other ways to shoot yourself in the foot)

I wanted to revisit this, as I just competed in all black. Unstoned, even. Apparently, we pulled focus just fine ;) The dress also got more compliments in a single competition than I think I have ever gotten on all my dresses combined. It's leading me to believe that maybe, sometimes, in the...

    Too much routine reliance

Tough. For even minor changes, you have to decide what you want to change, research options, try out options, pick the new choreo and then rehearse it until it is performance/competition ready - preferably enough that it happens without you consciously thinking about it. I just competed a new...

    pre-competition disorder

LOL. You have no idea how much agonizing went into me being able to express myself like that. I'm terrible about putting me first, and setting boundaries, but I'm working on it. And @RiseNFall I think much the same... but giving him that point cost me nothing and it really didn't matter to me...

Viennese Waltz: The Close Body Contact is Insane

For me the difference is whether it's a one-off or a recurring incident. A one-off, you apologize and excuse yourself immediately - leave with no explanation, claim a bathroom break, fake an injury, whatever - no worries. Embarrassing, yes, and inappropriate, yes, but I realize it happens...
