Do you ever take Advil before dancing?

But what if you have to dance, like you paid a lot of money in competition entry fees or there is show you've been preparing for months. When I start dancing every day before a big event, my knees often start bothering me and the only way I can get through the event is Advil. I strategically...

    How your feeling in Tango?

I don't really understand why, but my instructor insists I count QQS in Tango, but 1234 in Foxtrot. I need to ask him again, but any thoughts on that?

    Dance Audiobooks

When I saw this post, I thought: what a silly idea, dance audio books. But then I remembered the first workshop I attended given by a very well-known world championship-level ballroom dancer. The tickets were sold out, but I managed to get one. I even brought a partner with me who was just a...

    Venue for practice

Many gyms have large rooms with wooden floors for group classes such as zumba, yoga or what not. When there are no scheduled gym classes, I see couples and solo dancers practicing at my gym all the time, and not just ballroom. You would need to buy gym membership, of course.

Best Compliment(s) You've Ever Gotten On Your Dancing

I was once practicing with my partner in a somewhat empty studio and a couple of newbies came for their first lesson with another instructor. That instructor made them watch us waltzing around as an example, I guess. The newbie lady said to me afterwards: "wow, I couldn't stop watching you, you...

    Staccado vs Leggato

Ok, so maybe we have different understanding of the terminology. I agree in foxtrot (or in waltz for that matter), movement of the foot could or could not be on exact music beat and could depend on musicality and interpenetration of a particular song, but that's not what I think of as a...

    Staccado vs Leggato

I would say tango is is the only standard dance where I see staccato possible. I am curious, why foxtrot?

Does your teacher make you dance your routines by yourself?

Cool! maybe when I am the championship level (which is, never), I will find a value in practicing solo. I am just saying it has been counterproductive for me in the past.

Does your teacher make you dance your routines by yourself?

I am a follower and had a partner like that in the past, demanding I knew where I placed my foot, where my CBM was, my line of dance, my quality. I suppose, like you, he practiced his understanding of the direction and intention. Unfortunately, when we danced together, things fell apart quickly...

    Competition Makeup

Here is instructional video on ballet performance makeup with makeup brands names: I am not sure if the products are available in the US, looks like to me they might be.

Are your routines typed or written?

I never write down my routines, but I am blessed with a good memory. I've done showcases and promptly forgot the showcase routines when I ddidn't need them anymore, but I have videos in case I ever need them again, which never happened so far. Same goes for competitions, once we move to...

Does your teacher always have a lesson plan?

@open_mind, I'm guessing that you dance other than during the lessons? If so, how does the other dancing relate to your lessons? Unfortunately, dancing with my pro is my only ballroom dancing right now. I don't dance socially (not my thing). In the past, when I had a competitive partner, we...

Does your teacher always have a lesson plan?

I feel that my pro has a lesson plan for me about 50% of the time. I can't tell for sure, but sometimes I feel like he is not totally prepared and I need to remind him what we were working on last week. We focus exclusively on technique, not choreography or steps, and I admit it takes time for...

How Do You Keep Satin Shoes Clean? (clean dancing shoes)

Most people look at me funny when I say wash my dance shoes in the sink, but YES, dish soap and warm water work really well and don't leave residue after air drying. I was worried at first about ruining suede bottoms, but trust me, nothing happens to them! I found out it takes about 2-3 days to...

    Banned from the Studio

The fact that some studios ban certain teachers is not new and I can give you a few examples, but in most cases it's unspoken (or spoken behind closed doors) understanding. For a example, a new teacher comes to a studio and gets students assigned to him. He then opens his own studio and takes...

Is Pro Am becoming a sport of only the wealthy?

I might be thrown out of this thread if I start looking for a partner her, but this actually not a bad idea. Does forum have a place for partnership ads? Anyway, I am on the west coast, not near Chicago, sorry Loki!

Is Pro Am becoming a sport of only the wealthy?

It's sad, really. I competed a few years ago as am/am - about $40 per competition to enter, about $100 per week for a few private lessons , lots of practice in-between lessons.... oh those golden days... .... My pro just asked me about my dance goals and suggested to compete pro/am with him...

When you watch your dance videos

I wonder what do you notice most when you watch yourself dance on a video? What mistakes/flaws jump at you right away? I notice that I don't stretch enough, everything looks smaller than what I actually felt dancing, like I don't push myself enough. Also, behind music/not on music sometimes...

    Realistic expectations vs. limiting oneself

This may sound as a New Age view, but I find it very powerful. I set no limits and no expectations, but I apply discipline of staying in the present to every lesson and practice. I mean, try to adsorb what my instructor is saying on the verbal and non verbal plane without worrying about my...
