A bad practice partner is better than no partner?

Fascinating photos… 1940 seems an open embrace year!

A bad practice partner is better than no partner?

Please share links to these videos; i am fascinated by how people danced in the “old days”

A bad practice partner is better than no partner?

Of course, what you’re saying is true, but getting beyond that early phase is not a matter of one or two years, even for a dancer conscientious in his training. One problem is there are VERY FEW instructors who can break things down the way you describe, and they would prefer to work with more...

A bad practice partner is better than no partner?

I can’t imagine having entered the floor in the first years of dancing without set sequences—and boy did I make use of them, regardless of whether they had anything to do with the music—and in a set order too! After all, D’Arienzo, Di Sarli, and Biagi can all be danced in the same way, right...

A bad practice partner is better than no partner?

Isn’t this best dealt with in the changing room or after the milonga on a dark street at 3am?

    What an accurate observation!

A bad practice partner is better than no partner?

If you’re serious about tango, this is probably the right way, especially for Leads. It’s also totally unrealistic. A good compromise might be 6 months of training for a Follower before her first Milonga and 12 months for a Lead (God help the poor women who accept his cabeceo! I am full of...

    How to improve musicality

But you got there by making the distinctions. Of course, it’s great for your musicality to be so ingrained that you don’t have to think about it. I need another 5-10 years to get there!

    How to improve musicality

Absolutely! That is true musicality. But you have to distinguish between the underlying rhythmic pattern and the melodic line(s) and not blend the two into a chaotic mash of frantic steps. It is easier and safer to start with the underlying rhythm and dance to that.

A bad practice partner is better than no partner?

This is so true… I am not God’s gift to tango but I work hard at improving. My partner is far more advanced than i am (to the point she can literally dance every single tanda at a milonga if she desires) and we average 10-12 / hours a week of highly structured practice— I am not that good…...

    How to improve musicality

I know this is from long ago, but I was impressed to see the 3-3-2 reference (Pugliese’s Negracha, for example)… but dancing 3-3-2 is something rather advanced. (I’m writing this before looking at the YouTube…) To answer the OP: It is critical to understand the underlying rhythmic pattern (in...

Can you comment on my dancing in this video

Your self-awareness is a huge asset. This is where I would focus my effort to begin with.

Can you comment on my dancing in this video

It’s great you’re asking for feedback, but it will probably be most productive from a professional teacher. But Since you asked: I feel you are dancing with weight on both feet, never completing a step and achieving a vertical axis. That makes your pivots more difficult. I think there is a...

    Question to Leaders about Followers

Classification from Intermediate Lead who Takes lots of private lessons and practices on a daily basis (but still not a good dancer by any means). Attitude is important. Being friendly compensates for so much bad technique. It’s just a dance. Categories: 1) Happy, joyful beginner who dances...

    Leader experience of follower disassociation?

I suspect he was being a little lazy (“I was not feeling a big twist…”) and you woke him up and probably increased his torsion. It is really pleasant when the follower accentuates the right move in the right way. Think how nice it is when the Lead shows you the way — intoxicating—we’ll you did...

Single follower at Milongas (to risk or not to risk)

If you’re not known, go with the friendly and happy look. It is also important to smile DURING the tanda, especially if the lead is having trouble. Believe me, men notice ….

    Milongas in Washington DC

Single follower at Milongas (to risk or not to risk)

This is the right advice: network and improve your skills. It really is frustrating and humiliating to sit and not be invited. But from the standpoint of a leadyou want (who has invested years of effort in his dancing), what’s in it for him? It’s hard work leading an inexperienced follower. Why...
