Has anyone ever achieved gold status on most of the 10 styles in 1 year?

I suspect you really want to hear the maximum rate, not the average rate. An imprecise guesstimate would be the maximum progression rate to expect for a young, fit, talented, dedicated leader in an am-am couple would be one syllabus level per year, if they take frequent (ie weekly or more)...

Good DVDs or Instructionals that focus on Leading (Male)?

Veyrasset I agree with Loki. My partner and I used that same set of DVDs together with, not instead of, lessons.

Good DVDs or Instructionals that focus on Leading (Male)?

Welcome. We're so glad you are dancing and asking questions on DF! :) Since the lead in Standard is inherent in the leader's body action and posture, your first layer of information on how to lead will be to learn how to dance the figures yourself. You can use BOTH lessons and lectures to...

Giacomo Stecagglia appointed VP of DanceSport

The vision statement specifically mentions growing USA Dance on the west coast. The new VP is based in southern California. This could be good for us. I am hopeful it is good for everyone.

    Dance Meetup Groups

There was a MeetUp here for social ballroom that got handed over to me when the organizer tired of paying the subscription. I ran it for a year then recently deleted it because it was not worth the cost and nobody wanted to take it over from me. Many just used it as an auto-reminder for the...

    Late Entries

One of the guidelines my partner and I agreed upon when we made the partnership official was no late entries and no cancellations (when possible.) Our plan is to get registration in near the date it opens. We both like to be prepared and both feel once the commitment is made, we may as well...

Sharing videos of your classes with others

ethical? No, not in my opinion. legal? Maybe, but even if it might be legal, it does not seem polite. Seems easy enough to just ask the teacher their preference and go with that. Some teachers would be overjoyed to find their class video went viral. Others not so much.

Hot Ballroom Dancesport Challenge - new USAD comp on west coast

Right. And it is just "registered", not "sanctioned". Maybe that is because it is its first year. Also you can enter with just a social USAD membership, cheaper than a competitor membership.

    NDCA Syllabus Online (not really)

Because those NDCA syllabus reference ones on YT are just the tip of the iceberg. Real instruction videos run thru each figure lots of times, once for the "Left foot forward, right foot to side, left foot back" call-out, once for the timing, once for the footwork, once for the body actions or...

Hot Ballroom Dancesport Challenge - new USAD comp on west coast

There are very few USA Dance comps out here in California. You east-coasters are so lucky! The calendar is chock full of comps on your coast. So I'd like to see this new one succeed in Long Beach, California. I cannot post links yet but put this in google: Hot Ballroom Dancesport Challenge...

    NDCA Syllabus Online (not really)

Thank you for doing that. My partner and I, and our friends in class, have often exchanged links to those videos after class so we could better prepare for practice. We do also have shoe boxes full of DVDs. And we have highlighted, annotated and bookmarked little grey books. Because our time...

    How are your practices going?

Got the entire ballroom to myself for an hour this morning for solo practice before work. I put on a new ballroom CD my partner gave me and did drills and routines, trying to put in practice the corrections from my latest two lessons. It felt wonderful. Even tho I mess up far more than I get it...

New USA Dance proficiency point system

LOL. They call it "Fair Level Certification" in the intercollegiate system here, with the clear purpose to push onward those who no longer belong at the level they "point out of". More about fairness to other dancers than acclaim. To me the word "proficiency" is something you'd get rated...

Uncontested heats - how to be sure there will be competition at the competition

Wow! You are totally right! I had never even looked. I assumed it would be way more. For now, we're limited to day trips. But someday it would be wonderful to budget in one trip like that per year. Correct. I, and my partner even more so, cannot afford it in the usual/common form. But we love...

Uncontested heats - how to be sure there will be competition at the competition

Mr4Styles thank you for the data. I hope there is a much bigger field at Nor-Cal in 2017. We wanted to go last year. I guess that's obvious, as it was me who started the 'Lets all go to Nor-Cal NQE' thread last summer. Flying across the country is completely out of reach for us. But for...

Uncontested heats - how to be sure there will be competition at the competition

There are five local am-am collegiate bronze couples. I may suggest they look at Emerald as an option. I can mention it to our team captain. They're accustomed to paying only $30 for an entire competition day. But it's worth a try. I'll suggest we all go to either Emerald or the Hot Ballroom...

Uncontested heats - how to be sure there will be competition at the competition

Do they serve okra, aka gumbo? LOL. Seriously tho, why is the am-am more popular in the NE and SE than out here in California? Or is there a whole am-am scene that I'm just not finding? I think up in the SF Bay area there is more participation.

New USA Dance proficiency point system

I also read it thru, the short and long docs. I agree, it seems fair. This points system has a lot in common with the Collegiate Dancesport Association's system. Though there are differences. In CDA's Fair Level Certification you can point out within a season whereas with USA Dance you can stay...
