    Optimal Cities for Dancing

The Tampa Bay area has an interesting dance scene. Pro-am dancing sustains the ballroom economy, but there's really no equivalent competitive world for competitive amateur dancers. This occurs for a variety of reasons (many more women than men, older and wealthier demographic, a lack of ballroom...

Thanks for the information. Does anyone know how the socials are at Manhattan Ballroom? The list of coaches is impressive.

    Dance Socials in NYC

Hello all, I'm going to visit New York City for the first time this December. I'm only staying through a weekend, but I would like to do some dancing while there. I searched through the forum archives, but I'm unsure whether the information is up to date since dance communities shift and...

Which is easier for a beginner Ballroom or Salsa

Echoing Iolane . . . I danced ballroom for years before doing salsa. With the right instructor, you'll learn the technique for your dancing (including partner work, posture, balance, etc) that will translate really well to other styles. I really love salsa now and the connections are different...

    Follower's frame

Interesting advice Zoopsia- I've experienced that problem at ballroom socials. The challenge of getting used to different leaders is really interesting. I guess we all inevitably find our favorite people to dance with. I will try to keep all of this in mind :)

Changes Afoot on So You Think You Can Dance

That's true that the best dancer almost never wins, though I enjoy when the show presents a consistently strong top 10 and a real competition for the top 4 spots (especially since we watch those dancers perform the most). Last season fell flat to me in that regard. barrefly- that's interesting...

    Follower's frame

Thank you for the advice. My teacher has focused on the open position so I figured that "frame" was the simplest way to refer to it. I do understand that nuances of tango strongly separate it from the other styles (particularly ballroom tango). I'm especially curious about the level of tension...

    Social dancing vent...

When I started dancing ballroom, leaders would say "you need to relax". I would often have a bit too much tension in my frame. Other times, I would shake a bit if I was concentrating too hard, or if I felt at all tired (I also have low blood sugar). It would frustrate me to hear leaders...

    Follower's frame

What should a follower keep in mind for her frame in argentine tango? What qualities in the frame facilitate following? I just started taking a few tango group lessons (I've mostly danced ballroom and salsa), but different leaders have told me different things regarding the frame. Thanks in...

Changes Afoot on So You Think You Can Dance

I hope that the judges focus on the talent/ skill of the dancers rather than prioritizing "star quality" (which often results in very young dancers who lack experience). I think last season may have suffered due to this. While last season ran on television, I caught up with the Canadian show...

    Dance Shoes For Sale

I no longer dance ballroom and latin (I do salsa now), and I'm saving money for a summer study abroad program. I'm selling a pair are Supadance Court shoes, model 1008 size 4.5 W with 2.5 inch slim heels. These have elastic along the top of the ball of the foot. I am including a pair of heel...

    The arts aren't important

Thank you :) Sorry about all of the typos. I'm in the middle of finals- 11 more pages of writing to go . . . as you can see, I lurk around DF while I procrastinate.

    The arts aren't important

I've been lurking for a while, but I have very strong feelings on this subject, particularly arts in education. Here goes my rant :) It really bothers me to think that with government budget cuts education always takes a huge blow. Education develops our future. It's interesting what that...
