Dance Socials in NYC

Hello all,

I'm going to visit New York City for the first time this December. I'm only staying through a weekend, but I would like to do some dancing while there. I searched through the forum archives, but I'm unsure whether the information is up to date since dance communities shift and change. I'll be staying in Brooklyn, but spending a lot of time in Manhattan. I'm also a college student.

I used to dance international standard and latin for five years and I also know american style. Are there any great ballroom socials?

I also dance salsa for about 1 year, but I've danced mostly LA style on1. I've done a bit of NY on2 and casino.

I would like to go somewhere with not only great dancers, but a friendly atmosphere since I won't have a partner. Unfortunately, my travel friends do not dance.

Thanks in advance :)

Yogi,

Most NYC ballroom socials are held in the dance studios. They are generally quite inexpensive, attract a range of ages and abilities, and you do not need to be taking lessons at the studio in order to attend the socials. They are also generally quite welcoming, especially if you are a good dancer! If you run a search for NYC ballroom studios, or something like that, you should pull up a lot of info, but let us know if you need more guidance.
The 92nd St. Y has occasional ballroom parties. In December, they are holding a salsa fest on the 18th. I believe there are a lot of salsa clubs in NYC - you might want to post a thread on the salsa forum asking about those.
The Edison Ballroom is generally open several nights a month with live music and dancing.
I believe there are a number of college dancers on DF who hopefully can comment on social that may take place at the universities. Columbia and NYU have ballroom teams.
Enjoy your time in NYC.

Thanks for the information.

Does anyone know how the socials are at Manhattan Ballroom? The list of coaches is impressive.
