2004 Commonwealth Classic?

Hi folks!

Anyone attending or competing in this weekends Commonwealth Classic in Lowell, MA?

I might be going to watch tonight. Depends on how I'm feeling when I get back from my practice and lesson. :)

Hmmm ...

I don't recall placing this in Ballroom. Maybe I did, but thought I had placed it in General Dance. Imagine my befuddlement. Then I came back looking for it. I had to use Active topics to find it! Kind of funny. :)

Anyway, looks like I'm going to the Commonwealth Classic for the evenings events. Hope to be there early for any general dancing that might occur.

If any one else is going, I'll be the tall blond guy with glasses, navy blue jacket, khacki pants, blue shirt.

Feel free to introduce yourself!

Sorry if I confused you DP  but, since it's a ballroom comp, I thought more ballroom people would see it in the ballroom forum...

Ah! See, silly me ... and I thought I was in such a rush to get to a practice and lesson with my dance partner that I had a senior moment before getting out of my 30s. ;)

Well, off I go to the Commonwealth Classic! :D

Wow!

The four couples in the Pro Open 1-Dance show were outstanding!

Tibor Kerekes and Rachel Whitney from Boston did a very strong interpretation of some music with a vampire theme placing 2nd. Kerekes even whited out his face and included beard like makeup, and at the end he does a dip with bite, and then lowers Whitney to the floor as she remains still at the end of the song.

However, it wasn't quite good enough to overtake Christian Clayton and Kathryn Vaughn from Trabucocahon, Ca. They performed a waltz with both dressed all in black. They entered from same end of the floor, but different corners, and were just totally on the music throughout! The emotion of love conveyed through their use of motion to the music was incredible! It almost seemed, as they left the floor returning to their corners, a sense of pride, satisfaction, and joy from Whitney, and Clayton looks back over his shoulder to catch another quick glimpse of his love as she returns to the rest of her world.

I didn't make note of any of the results, but it was a very interesting evening of dancing. Slightly less competitors then Yankee Classic, and thus less audience, too. What a great location for a dance competiton! For those who are unaware, the Lowell auditorium is a huge theatre like place. The main floor is encirlced by the floor seats and a balcony. With the music being played form the stage, the sound quality was very, very good. There really wasn't a bad seat in the building for watching ballroom dancing!

Brought a friend with me to the comp who had never been to something like this live. She was a little reluctant to go at first, but was very glad she went.

I wish I had known in advance, DP! I competed on Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Saturday night and this morning. I'm dead! I had a great time, though and did very well for myself (first time I've won scholarship money - amen!). If you were there on Fri or Sat night, I did Pro/Am Rhythym Silver both nights (yellow, somewhat long dress, with fringe). The floor was lousy on Friday night; I did much better the next day.

Tibor and Rachel are stunning to watch. I especially *love* Rachel's light blue dress because it just brings out her eyes.

Glad to be home; I"m pooped. And I did buy this catsuit/pants outfit from a pro at my studio and wore it this morning. It was VERY comfortable and really enjoyable NOT wearing a dress for the third day in a row. I don't think the judges marked me down any; I got pretty much what I expected. If someone took a decent picture of it, I'll post it. Someone took one with my camera, but the flash wasn't on.

So you did go through with the comp, after all. I thought you would. Glad it went well, after all the soul-searching it caused you, MQ. 8)

Yes, I couldn't really pass up the opportunity. It was so close to home; my husband and kids were finally able to come watch. It probably won't happen often.

I got my notice from work a little over a week ago, so I'm going to be busy job hunting. I'm probably going to sell all three of my dresses and get less expensive ones (or rent) when the opportunity arrives.

And, btw, talk to me about the catsuit. What does it look like? I don't think I have the bod for it  , but you never know.

I'll e-mail you a picture, although it's a great shot of my instructor and me, it didn't come out very clear and it's on the dark side. I have a very BASIC editing program, so I can't really do much with it. And I wondered long and hard about the body in the suit, but I did get a lot of compliments on it - it pays to be different sometimes!

Yup. Those bumps and bulges give me pause, sometimes, too.  But hey! God gave women bulges for a reason ... because they're ... yummy. (At least that's what I tell myself.  )

Hi MQ:

Sorry I didn't post this thread sooner. I realize it was a last minute idea on my part, but worth a shot just in case.

Saw lot's of dancing on Saturday Night, I was there from about 6:45 pm till it finished close to 11pm. Can't remember every dancer, but wish I could. Had I posted this thread sooner we might have been able to meet. My apology.

I'm planning to compete with my new partner at the Seacoast Classic in Dover, NH on February 5th. Maybe if you come up to that one we can meet then. It is a low key event inside a town hall, but it has plenty of space for the dancing, and decent audience space, too. The comp goes on during the day, and there is usually a general dance in the evening, too! :)

I'll be competing international style for the first time, newcomer and pre-bronze. Waltz and Tango a definite. Quickstep likely, maybe V. Waltz, but not enough time to be competent in Foxtrot, too.

Hi DP,

I saw an ad for that comp. They really make it very reasonable to compete and/or attend. Maybe I can make it up for the evening dance. I'll let you know ahead of time. I *think* I've been there before.

They do a nice job for the size of the comp. All the events are on one day, often not lot's of competition, yet it works very well if one is new to dance comps. Highly recommended!

The studio where I take lessons brought a handful of folks last year and even a formation team. This year I suspect since the studio is larger in numbers, that there will be more competitors, particularly since it is as reasonable with their entry fees as they are. And the spectator fee for all day is a steal!

I'll post a thread when we get closer to the event. Hope to see you there!
