2021 competition opportunities

Skip the franchise and save the money for another comp in the summer/fall?

hmmm, it’s a thought, but I’ve already budgeted one more big comp in the fall. Not planning to do a big one in the summer because of family trip.

IFP and her husband are competing in Open Latin and Open Ballroom at Heritage next week. I'm going to Atlanta to have lunch with them, and am also going to visit the dress vendors onsite (I've already emailed them about what inventory they're bringing).

Oh - and of course, I'll probably watch a little dancing, too. ;)

my pro will be there with his latin student competing on Friday evening!

Any advice for me- I plan to take the plunge and jump back into competing- my last competition was Aug 2019. Since then, I found a new teacher who is out of state- did lessons whenever I could, worked in the hospital as a frontline physician for the past several months during Covid . Have 3 new dresses, and although I don’t feel ready- part of me is excited to get back into competition. I am fully vaccinated- and still follow all precautions as far as protecting others and myself. I feel like superwoman since my second vaccine dose as far as the virus.
As far as competition- I feel scared, anxious, excited, stressed, happy and hopeful all at the same time.
I really like and respect my new teacher- and we have developed a great relationship . He says he’s very excited to compete with me and can’t wait to get out there. I just hope I don’t let him down.
I have butterflies thinking about it- but I made the commitment today- paid for flights, booked hair and makeup and hotel.
I welcome any advice, thoughts, recommendations etc.
Comp is end of March!

I think the best advice i can give is that it takes a bit to get your dance legs back. So be patient with yourself if the first few dances go a little wonky.

I only have two things to suggest.

First, set a goal that you can meet. That could be as simple as complete all the dances without falling on my face. Especially when flexing a long-disused competition muscle, it is important not to get mentally caught up in marks and placements.

Second, savor and enjoy it! That, ultimately, is The Point.

Thanks, I think that is great advice!

i think my studio owner got possessed by a pod person. SHe is suddenly like "wanna do an independent comp? wanna do them all? we're doing them all!"

UM WHERE WERE YOU BACK WHEN I WAS WILLING TO PAY LADY

here's me saying i gotta not be crazy pants, and she's like DO IT ALL. bout to LOSE MY MIND.

so i told her usdc, and two more small independents. (twin cities or indy in the summer, then something else in the fall/winter).

SHE DIDN'T EVEN BLINK SHE SAID OK. she's been replaced by an alien.

with the franchise regionals and maybe one other FA inter-regional, i should be able to keep a decent schedule and momentum, even if not once a month. and without destroying my bank account. unless something changes, i won't be doing ohio, since it's my son's birthday that day.

I probably shouldn't make unwarranted assumptions about your studio, and don't want to jinx myself, but I'm not as taken aback by this. The pandemic has caused a lot of business to dry up, both lessons and competitions (and I suspect our studio owners are suffering serious withdrawal from the last year with no travel) and there's more willingness now to be flexible to bring money in the door. I'm still a bit surprised that I convinced my studio to let me do that virtual comp. I've got another one I'm going to pitch after the studio event in a couple weeks (I know they are busy preparing, so I don't want to dump something extra on them right now, though my instructor is aware). Again, they will likely be happy just to have someone paying $$$$ to do a comp to keep paying the bills, even if it doesn't enable them to take a luxury vacation.

ScullyTwin42,
I wonder if the FA headquarters suddenly told franchises to "Let people do independent comps!" Covid restrictions probably did make business dry up. Also, it might be that dancers started hunting around for other options during Covid. The competition oriented dancers and/or those who take multiple lessons a week might have been especially motivated to do that. (We know people around here talked about finding new teachers when their former teachers wouldn't or couldn't provide services.)

If they've taken a hit, FA might be under some pressure to adjust their franchise rules to encourage steps to keep students especially the more lucrative ones!
