Standard and Latin heat lists up for NYDF. Just FYI: Silver Smooth B1 and B2 several heats have semis, in singles; from what I can see, also C multis. I'm playing a guessing game by looking up the names of teachers I know do silver smooth -- not efficient, but it's what I've got.

Talked to Pro today about potential competitions this year. A couple one-day small local-ish comps in the next two months, but I don’t think I’d be ready for that. I think instead I’d like to do one of the larger competitions later and feel more confident about it.

I had a great time at Virginia State several years ago. Silver smooth and a Solo. The organizer adjusted the schedule for the solo when our flight was canceled, a very nice help.
Entries are in for Royal Ball, Los Angeles. This will be the first time out on the floor with the new pro, also the first time competing in about 8 years - and the first time since cancer/chemo. I was left with long term side effects including nueropathy in my feet. I love dancing though, and overcoming the challenges both physical and mental. Getting it right with a good partner to good music is such a joy. We'll see how it goes. I'm set up for just 3 rounds of singles, and 3 multi/scholarship entries. I used to do 2X this or more. Pro is super supportive which helps a ton.

Wow, that’s great, and that’s more dancing than I do at a comp. I only do two rounds of singles and two multi dance events. Good luck and have fun!

I’ve never even been to a competition before (I just started taking lessons in Dec) but I’m going to the gala with my studio because the owners, my pros are dancing. I don’t know if we’re having a table or what. Excited to see what it’s all about!
I'm sure you'll have a great time. I've not been to this event yet. The large ballrooms are beautiful and exciting.
My pro has 1 other student, also dancing smooth. I'll be silver, closed and open. He will be gold/open.
There might be others from our area as well. (San Diego)

Hmm. So, here’s a nuclear option:
Adopt a rule: “Organizers must report to the NDCA the names of studios and competitors who are “late entries” to the competition. Any studio or competitor who has been reported 2 times as “late entries” in any calendar year shall be barred from entering any additional competitions in that calendar year unless entries to such competitions are submitted and paid for prior to the deadline of the competition. Any studio or competitor appearing two or more times on the “late entries” list for 3 consecutive years shall be barred from entering any competitions for a period of 5 years unless entries to such competitions are submitted and paid for prior to the deadline of the competition.”
Oh, I get it, believe me – in the short-term, angry studios/pros/students, and some lost revenue for the competition that gets caught in the time-bar. But if it’s an NDCA rule, they can all be mad at the NDCA rather than the competition organizers. And if the angry students/customers put the grief on the studios/pros (where it really belongs) and pressure the studios/pros to get the entries in on time for the competitions the students/customers want to attend….maybe the irresponsible studios/pros will pull their socks up. ([koff] another reason for organizers to provide pricing informing directly to the students/customers. If it isn’t hidden from the students/customers….well, then it’s easier to hold the studios/pros feet to the fire.)
(It's been a day at work where everyone has some cockamamie request that they insist has to be reviewed – so I’m just in the mood to invent my own far-fetched plan.)

How about putting in an entry deadline, with the penalty being a late fee, *plus* late entries are not eligible for top teacher or top student (and maybe also not eligible for whatever other perks studios might usually get for lots of entries)?
That should put a stop to the big studios doing late entries. It would only work if all comps did it and enforced it though, I think. Otherwise the big studios would just do late entries at the comps that still allow them. Maybe it's time for all the organizers to band together and decide how to do tough love simultaneously.

I have always been a planner, and I still can't get over how everything in ballroom is so last minute. It is so unprofessional to submit entries so late the organizers can't get the schedule put together. I sounds so entitled to me, "everyone wait on last minute studio and studio will get around to it whenever"
Yes, I am sure the studio is waiting on VIS (very important student) to make up their mind but I still see it as tacky and entitled. Cal and raindance made good suggestions, but it would have to happen at the NDCA level or the individual comp would suffer.

I'm waiting for Gateway. I decided it was at "just the right time" to make up for my pro not making it to Snow Ball (and it looks like that's workin gout for me.)
Rhythm is on Thursday morning. As you read, organizers are powerless to get the heat lists put together yet. I'll live.

It can be done at Studio level. Studio sets deadline for students to let Studio know if they are competing, and in what categories. After all, there may be overlapping ages/levels, and Studio has to try to fairly decide who can enter what. Studio submits this set of entries. Any "late deciders" have to settle for what is "leftover". First group of entries timely, with student "reward" that they are more likely to have their choices. Late entry group gets "leftovers". Hopefully with time, late entry group will be a rare occurrence, for unusual situation.
Have seen this happen before. And now, due to a busy schedule, I will be "late decider". I may not be competing at Tri-State as originally planned.
Studio had been made aware. And if I can compete, will chose from what is available or consider a different competition.
