2024 Competition Opportunities

What raindance said, and you will have to dance both rhythm and smooth on the same day. Not sure if you change your hair for each style but keep that in mind.

Also, more open dancers can be more aggressive on the floor. The first time I danced open, I gave way a lot and it affected my dancing. Got to hold your position at times and have them go around you sometimes. Good practice for later, but something to keep in mind

Yep, doing Rising Star in rhythm would have me dancing both styles on Wednesday (including an evening session, which I’ve never done). Even worse, doing Rising Star in smooth would require me to stay an extra day in Ohio, because that event is on Thursday. (An extra night at the hotel for me and Pro, an extra hair & makeup session….)

So, yeah, that’s not in the cards for me this year.

USA Dance is pulling together a “new” competition in the Chicago area in October. There used to be a very popular Chicago Dancesport Challenge that was organized by the USA Dance Chicago Chapter – but because the primary organizers at the Chicago Chapter are elite-level amateur competitors, USA Dance didn’t want them to be the organizers. So, last year, USA Dance approved an outside for-profit organizer to take over the competition. But apparently that organizer was not approved for a competition this year.

So, very recently, USA Dance announced that there will be an October competition in Chicago, now re-branded at the Midwest Regional Dancesport Championships, and it seems that it’s another for-profit organizer. The only information posted so far is are the dates and the hotel venue, a very, very tentative general schedule, and the likely pricing. It must be unbelievably stressful to pull together a competition on such short notice.

Oh, how I wish I had an amateur partner!!!!! Anyway, I contacted the organizers to ask if they would offer Adult Solo Starz – I’d enter that category in a heartbeat.

Not going to travel to Chicago but I'll add my vote for Adult Solo Starz at comps. As for whether it is mixed with couples, that does not make it any more hazardous than all solo.

Couple years back when we used to go to The Big City to do more realistic rounds, my partner often opted out of VW because VW wasn't included in our multis. So I did VW solo.

Then once at a comp we got combined on the floor with a heat that did include VW in their multi so we had to step off. I was SOOOO tempted!

I'm not seeing anything on the comp calendar. Where'd you hear about this?

Midwest Regional Danceport Championships was announced in emails that I’d received from the USA Dance Senior Committee (8/13/24), and the August USA Dance Digest (8/16/24), and it’s listed in American Dancer. The dates are given as October 18 – 20, 2024, with an entry deadline of September 22. They give a website of midwestregionaldancesport.com

Odd that USA Dance hasn’t listed it on its website calendar.

Maybe the left hand and right hand aren't talking.

I note that the contact info on the website is...rather generic.

I'll be there from Bronze Rhythm through Bronze smooth through Open Smooth Pro show!! There's one full absolutely day that has me thinking, "What the heck am I got to do in Columbus on that day?
