2026 Competition Opportunities

I see it was $60 wholesale for USDC single dance wise last year, with 240-300 for for multis. It hasn’t been updated for this year. I just was wondering if OSB, Millennium, Emerald, etc were comparable.

Unless I’m missing something, entry tickets even for sessions you are dancing in are still the norm. That is a practice that needs to be strictly banned across the board.
I compete mainly in the NY-NJ-CT area. Previously, usually had to pay for entry ticket for sessions I was competing in. Last few years has been changing. Competitors more likely to
receive entry ticket free to sessions they compete in.
Agree, this should be across the board. If I am dancing/competing in a session, I should not have to pay a fee to enter the competition room!

My experience is limited. I’ve only competed at OSB (3 times) & Empire (once), & I didn’t have to pay any ballroom entry fees.

However, considering how expensive competing is overall, the entry fees are the least of my worries.

Sorry about getting the numbers wrong. I should have checked my spreadsheets instead of relying on my memory.

I see. My experience is limited as well. I’ve done Nashville Starz (twice), Ft. Lauderdale Classic, Michigan Dance Challenge, Heart of America and Nashville Ballroom Bash. All have required tickets for non package holders, though Michigan and Nashville Ballroom Bash has since eliminated them.

I will be doing Wisconsin in a few weeks, and it requires tickets for non package holders as well. Maybe it’s a Midwest thing?

You say OSB doesn’t require them, but USDC does. What about the other big comps like Millennium, Manhattan, Emerald, Embassy, etc?

I stand by my statement that the NDCA needs to ban the practice of requiring session tickets for competitors, package or not, across the board.

I am not sure this type of ban will do anything. Organizers can simply re-price something else, e.g., increase the heat fee or package fee.
As a competitor, not having to buy an entry ticket, indicates respect to me, that I chose to enter their competition. I did not have enter theirs. Here in the east coast USA, there are many competitions to choose from.
Organizers will increase prices as they feel appropriate. To cover inflation and/or make up for revenue lost. It is then up to me on how to spend my money.
How much is my budget for dance? What aspects are important to me? How important? Who/what gets part of my budget? How big a part? We each control the "purse strings" on our budget.

Yay! Manhattan Dance Championships registration forms state “All Entry fees include admission into the ballroom for teacher and student.”

Another plus: their wholesale prices are stated right there on the registration forms. (It won’t save me any money, but I always appreciate transparency.)

Another plus: Pro/am Smooth singles & multis are all on the same day.

Another plus: I can get a direct flight to Newark airport. No risk of missing a connection if our flight takeoff is delayed, or of luggage getting stuck in the layover airport. (Still a risk of flight getting canceled, but you can’t control everything.)

Fingers crossed!

Could be... I'm about to attend a comp that requires tickets for non package holders. tbh I have not given this a whole lot of thought - I won't say it doesn't matter, but I have about 50 dance/comp things I have much more vocal opinions about.

Data points = data point +1

idk if it is still the same, but OSB (a couple years ago) was surprisingly not that much more than some of the smaller, less prestigious comps I have been to, with respect to heat fees.

Just looked at the schedule for pro-am at Emerald. I thought it was interesting.

Tuesday day, Bronze and Silver Rhythm including multis; night, Nightclub
Wednesday day, Bronze and Silver Smooth including multis
Wednesday night, Gold and Open Rhythm including multis
Thursday day, Bronze Ballroom including multis; Gold and Open Smooth including multis
Friday day, Silver, Gold, Open Ballroom incl. multis
Saturday is Latin day

Just saw the Jack and Jill videos posted on another thread at the Beach Bash competition.... and ran over here to say...

Love seeing the Jack and Jill events spreading to more comps and being supported with Pro participation.

It's exciting to watch. It's also much more humanizing to me. We get used to watching Pros do perfectly choreographed pieces that they've practiced hundreds of times and execute near perfection. But watching the Jack and Jill event, there a brief micro-moments that you can tell that the chemistry and nuanced synchronicity is not at the same level as it might be with their regular partner, but its still lovely and their individual skills still shine - and that's just as admirable to me (or maybe even a little more inspiring) as the traditional partnership model.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the videos and do hope the trend goes viral and more comps give Jack N Jill events a try.

I’m doing Wisconsin this week, and yesterday, I got a call to inform me I was changed hotels due to a major overbooking at the Pfister where it is held. Odd since I booked months in advance. Has this happened to anyone else at any comp?

Good news is I’m being comped so no hotel charges for me!

I got bumped from a hotel like this years ago during a trip to D.C. (non-dance related)... though in my case, we found out at check-in when they briskly put us in a cab to the next hotel before I could even mentally process what was happening. It ended up being fine, and since we had already pre-paid (I think through expedia or one of those online booking sites) there were no additional charges.

That said - how far is the new hotel from the comp? Agree it's good to have a room and no charges, but I would not be happy - I want the ability to go back to my room between heats as needed (to change dresses, or grab something I forgot, eat a snack, take a break or short nap, etc).

I'll also be at Wisconsin but I decided after the Pfister was booked so I knew I'd be walking down the street beforehand. I have still never done that though. Hopefully, it won't be too challenging.

It’s the Milwaukee Marriott just around the corner. It’s not too bad, I’m a guy so it’s easier for me to carry my stuff (don’t need as much), but if I was a girl who needed a 3/4 am hair/makeup appointment, I would not be happy.

Apparently, this was not an organizer issue and the issue was purely the hotel. There are multiple events going on at hotel in addition to WSDC as well as multiple events in the city as a whole. From what I’ve heard through the grapevine, the organizers are not happy to put it mildly.
