A dancer's list of resolutions - 2015

Well, I've continued to struggle with my diet. I keep intending to get it where it needs to be, and it's improved some, but not to the extent I'd notionally like. On the plus side, if my current prospective partner and I work out (a non-trivial "if" due to the logistical issues involved), I see no reason why we shouldn't be able to treat competing in novice/pre-champ smooth at 2016 Nationals as a realistic goal.

Well, already failing at doing rounds every week, but we have at least done them (I think) 3 out of 4 weeks. Extra motivation came from upcoming competitions.

Still mentoring and teaching, and amazingly some beginners have gotten the idea of international foxtrot! I will not take all the credit though; they work hard and have attending our professionally-taught technique classes and such.

So it's the last week of February - where are we in our resolutions/affirmations/all-around-good ideas for dancing?

I finally starting going to yoga last week. It hurts to raise my arms to the tabletop in order to type this. ;)

I'm gonna do something different and gradde myself on each goal / resolution. Keep in mind that I'm actively fighting grade inflation for my self-evaluation, so I wouldn't expect a lot of A's even if I was really happy with where I was at.

Conditioning outside the studio (incl. injury prevention): I was on a roll for a couple weeks, but a cold turned sinus infection I let drag on far too long was pretty killer in terms of making progress here. I still get some strength conditioning in at least twice a week, and I've been near weekly on yoga (really feel the flexibility benefit after just an hour session), but I'd like to be doing far more in this area. I have ordered a yoga mat online though, which should be the kick in the arse I need to get out and try the free week promotions at a couple local studios (to build a good base level of flexibility and also try out a couple different styles of instruction to have a better idea what I like and if I'm willing to budget for it).
Grade: B- (would like to see more from myself, but realistically there were extenuating circumstances)

Driving amateur partnership goals: totally bombed talking with one partner before she left for a two month sabbatical, but in the process of making a spreadsheet with all the comps I'd consider travelling to and drafting a proposed plan for myself and my smooth partner (hoping I can work at least one trip back to the Midwest in there!). I will definitely treat this as a work-in-progress category, made more difficult by current long-distance status for both my partnerships.
Grade: D (not really passing, but have the potential to get there)

Healthy eating: Not great, definitely had multiple nights where ice cream was my dinner (or even worse, a pepperoni pizza followed by ice cream) and definitely proved I'm marginally capable at best at getting a pint of good ice cream to last multiple sittings. But I have given up most dessert items for Lent, so at least now I've got a religiously motivated reset period where, in addition to focusing on the spiritual aspect of the season, I'll also be focusing mental energy on healthy eating with a quite high level of accountability. So far, I'm under a week in, but progress appears to be good.
Grade: C+ (good effort recently, but definitely didn't come out of the gates hot)

Budgeting: Ha. Haven't even started one or thought about it too much, although I did cut back my standing one-on-one smooth lesson to a lesson only when I couldn't fit in a partnership lesson in the same week. I have been doing better at being mindful of splurge purchases (like COFFEE) throughout the week and I'm pretty sure that's leading to good results on that front. I've also recently decided that I have enough professional wear to last me for at least the next year, so outside of a couple statement pieces / replacing broken shoes, I won't be spending much on clothing (I enjoy shopping more than most guys - gotta be careful there!). I'm unsure how salary increase and increased / changed retirement goals will work out, and I'll also likely need to reevaluate once I hit around July when my lease is up, as my housing costs will likely go up (I found an incredibly cheap deal for the area where I live). Hopefully, though, the weekly ballet class I really enjoyed can sneak back in.
Grade: C- (still passing, but just barely)

(Bonus one) Planning practice time/being intentional with my dance training: This one was prompted by my coach's three-week training trip, before which I volunteered to draft a list of my practice goals while he was out so that he and I were aligned on what I would accomplish during the time. This also led me to make a commitment to 3-4 hours of dedicated Latin practice per week (small potatoes by most folks' standards, but I aim to be really, really efficient with my practice time). At his suggestion, I've gotten in the habit of planning out exactly what drills and for how long I'll practice each time I get to the studio / work gym and leveraging technology (ballroom comp trainer app and your basic phone timer) to keep me on task throughout with music and without music sections of my training. I'm hoping to get some time to sit down with my smooth instructor in the near future to do a similar exercise, and hopefully I'll soon be making far better progress on both styles. Also, now that my phone is on my body for practice purposes more often, I'll probably want to sew an arm/body band to hold it so that I can easily make adjustments without it flopping around during drills.
Grade: B+ (good trend, haven't achieved enough yet to say it's outstanding)

And with those grades, we're looking at a GPA of 2.2. Ouch.

Well, at least I've got plenty of room to go up!!

So for mine:

- Keep up the good diet, exercise and practice habits that were brought in last year. Add in a little more cardio ideally, but if all I do is maintain, I'll consider that a win.

Mostly winning here. I've been consistently hitting the gym twice a week in addition to my dance training/practice, and while I don't particularly enjoy the cardio sessions, I'm already seeing the payoff. Being only slightly winded at the end of a 5-dance set (rather than dead) at my last comp is huge progress... and with the recent upgrades to my QS routine, I am going to need to keep this up. Practice has stayed consistent, and aside from a week or so of eat-ALL-the-packaged-food cravings (and giving in to them - mmm, KD, hotdogs, pizza, licorice, potato chips... fell off the wagon big time!), diet has been fine. And I am now back on track :)

- Concentrate on enjoying the competitive experience. I chose to do this, and there is no sense in stressing about it.

I actually had fun at my last comp! While competing, not just once I was done!

- Take steps to bring the fun back into dance. Latin is coming back into my schedule at the end of Feb, and I start a weekly ballet class in a couple of weeks. I love to dance, and it doesn't need to be all about competition all the time.

Have been doing ballet for about a month, and have reminded pro that latin lessons were planned to start... we had spoke about starting them next week, but as I just signed up for a coaching session in standard for next week, it may be the week after.

- Make my open scholarship début, and be competitive in it by the end of the year.

Part I of this is planned for April (*gulp*).

- Compete in a location that will let my family come to watch.

Also planned for April (*double gulp* - may be more nervous about this than débuting in open!)

- Keep dance in perspective - well try, anyway! - and not let all the little things that happen at the studio drive me crazy. This is not my whole life.

So far so good on this!

And on the pipe dream side... find an amateur partner.

Hahahaha....

So… February goal… short month… Because of some things going on (not to mention that I already missed one day I shoulda coulda practiced), I would say 22 times is reasonable, so I'll set it at 23 to push myself a tiny bit.

I'm short, but if you don't count the days missed from illness, I'm only down 1 from my goal. While it is reasonable to excuse "sick days", there were a couple more days earlier in the month that I didn't practice--if I had, getting sick at the end of the month wouldn't have mattered so much.

March...31 days, 4 full weeks, plus I'm still sick, so I'll say I'll try for 31-5=26 days of practice. One day off a week and an additional one for being sick. (I'm planning on being well enough to dance by Tuesday and on not getting sick again.) I count lesson days as practicing because I'm always there early doing a lot of pre-lesson warm-up/stretching/practicing. I don't count "dance party" days unless I get there early enough to practice beforehand.

This turned out to be more than slightly optimistic. A 10 day course of antibiotics, followed by a short treatment with steroids, followed, eventually, by a 21 day course of antibiotics.... By then, I was no longer sick, but tired and sleeping a lot. I'm gradually regaining strength, but I can tell a real difference from before I got sick. Given how long I was sick for, I did pretty well in terms of keeping up my dancing. I have a competition about two months away which gives me plenty of time to get stronger, but I have to be careful while I do it. (Remember, I'm older than most of you--VERY easy to hurt myself by doing too much.) So, the next two months will be focusing a bit more on exercising than I had been, but still doing 6 days a week dance practice as well. Wish me luck with this!

I did compete in front of my family last month... and début in open scholarship... and win it (albeit only at a mid-size comp), so I guess I can check off "be competitive" from my list of resolutions.

So, aside from the one resolution that is not really within my control (amateur partner), I've checked off all of mine... and it's barely May. Maybe I wasn't ambitious enough with the goals?

Going good with my goal to speak Chinese and Spanish better. Practicing both near every day with help of video skype lessons, youtube and books.

[description of month long lingering illness is April deleted] I have a competition about two months away which gives me plenty of time to get stronger, but I have to be careful while I do it. Competition now one month away and I'm feeling much stronger than I was. I did well, though practice was more like 5 days a week. The way it worked out, however, I needed some days off for recovery... that crucial injury prevention! More of the same for this month, but I need to be more conscientious about stretching. I'll say 6 days a week, but I can replace one of those with just stretching if I need to prevent overworking various muscles.

And... I did well, but this next month is all about injury prevention. I'm a teacher on summer break so practicing is not the issue--being cautious about how and how much I practice is more the issue. I like stretching, I'm OK with strength exercises, for some reason I hate icing the various body parts that need it (three at the moment :)). So, my commitment this month is two sessions a day with ice packs, daily intelligent stretching, 3-4 times a week strength and balance sessions, and not more dance practice than is wise. I'm currently taking 4 days off and find myself frequently thinking, "it wouldn't hurt to practice xyz just a little bit", but have thus far managed to control myself.

I had a not very good autumn. By mid-September, had had a series of Stupid Injuries that I am almost recovered from. Also, had a lot of work related issues, which meant a lack of time and a lot of stress. Those are getting better. I would like to end the year with a good month and it is almost December, so my goals for December:
--daily work on rehabbing knee injury, which includes stretching/yoga
--core specific exercises 3 times a week to rebuild strength
--upper body/back strength exercises 2-3 times a week to rebuild strength
--at least short practice all but one day of the week that I don't have lessons (uncertain because I don't know what teachers are doing over the holidays). Except I'll give myself two days off for Christmas Eve and Christmas. :D

So, it's December... How'd we do?

Me, I dabbled in the gym/yoga studio until about September. Then i got serious and went "for realsies" at least three times a week. And voila, what a difference I can feel in my dancing. I hate working out, but my body's telling me "I told you so!" My legs are stronger so I have way more control in rumba and certainly bolero. Consistent stretching has paid off in my shaping and my lines. So now I'd say it's not a resolution for 2016 but a habit, thanks to 2015.
