A reason not to go to jail?

Just came across this re Paris Hilton's jail sentence. :nope: I am starting to believe, rather than think, she won't serve any time at all! Hmmm. When a child/teenager gets into trouble at school, they often avoid being expelled, if the parents are wealthy enough and gave sufficient money to build a new wing/library. (Or maybe I have watched too many rich kid/poor kid Z-rated movies...)

Perhaps Ms Hilton should fund a new jail wing? :cowboy:

In lieu of jail, due to overcrowding, what other punishments could be handed out to those who commit similar offences?

LOS ANGELES - Paris Hilton may spend far less than 45 days in county jail for violating probation because of state policies and jail overcrowding, authorities said Thursday. Hilton, sentenced last week to do the time, could spend three weeks or less behind bars because of a state requirement that grants inmates time off for good behavior and because of overcrowding in the system, Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

"It's possible that it could be 21 days, 23 days. It's a complicated formula that the state sets down. It's possible that she could do less time," Whitmore told The Associated Press.

As for overcrowding, "our jail is bursting at the seams" and some women inmates have been released after serving only 10 percent of their sentence, Whitmore said.

Last year, "Lost" actress Michelle Rodriguez was sentenced to 60 days in jail for violating probation after her drunken driving arrest in Hawaii. She was released in hours because of overcrowding.

Hilton's time will be determined when she is booked into the county system, Whitmore said.

She will not receive any favors because she is a celebrity, he added.
"She will be treated like any other inmate who's classified as a low-level security risk," Whitmore told the Los Angeles Times, which first reported the development on its Web site.

A call to Hilton's publicist seeking comment was not immediately returned.
Hilton, 26, was sentenced last week for violating the terms of her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. A judge ordered her to report to the women's jail in Lynwood by June 5.

Hilton intends to appeal and her fans have posted a petition on the Internet urging Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to pardon her.

I am amazed that the police are so diligent on giving this driver jail time when many hit and run and deaths due to drivers running over pedestrians are let free because it was an 'accident':

I feel like Jay Leno here - The article says "The truck stayed at the scene." (good thing there's no law about reading an article before you post ;)).

And it doesn't stop there:
  • The jail time came from a judge (vs. police)
  • "Many" . . . "are let free" - and that came from what source?
I know, I know, everyone's a comedian - just working with available material!

Ok, sorry, I guess the next time I murder someone, I'll stay 'at the scene' and that will exempt me from being charged.

the distinction is that someone was KILLED by the driver, who was not charged. I personally feel that murder by vehicle is more of a crime than being caught while intoxicated.

Murder by vehicle.

And yes, the police made the distinction to not charge, hence the driver of the car that disobeyed the law is NOT being brought before a judege to be sentenced or tried. I also find THAT to be incomprehensible.

I am trying to point out that while Ms Hilton was breaking a law, so was the person in this murder.

Leno,s latest jibe --- " a lot of people are disappointed she got 45 days _- they were hoping for execution ! "

The old saying--money can buy you the best defence . Looks like it didnt work as well for her.

I have a very fixed position on drunk drivers-- go to jail-- do not collect 200 ( £ - $ ) and an automatic sentence of 1 yr minimum .
does not the judicial system get it ?-- they( . d.d. ) are endangering the lives of others.

Read the statistics in the States--its frightening .

There is ( or was ) a European country, that impounded your car, and jail time was automatic. As I re call , the d .d . incidents dropped dramatically .

Remember-- it could be you , or one of your loved ones .

There's not a lot of info there. Was he making a legal left turn? Was she jaywalking? Extreme example: if I walk across the interstate and get hit, that's not "murder" on the part of the driver. Accidents DO happen. But when someone knowingly risks others lives by getting behind the wheel intoxicated, THAT is not an accident.

Interesting. I've been following this since nothing else is on lol, and I must say that I've taken some Criminal Justice classes, and have dealt with the police department here, I think that Paris should serve some time from what I've dealt with here. I'm not sure if it should be 45 days, but apparently nothing else was working. They said that they tried community service etc., but that she wouldn't show. So, there isn't really much to appeal now since she pretty much ruined those chances anyways by her actions. I'd probably give her rehab though on top of a sentence if she can't serve that amount of time. Or something else on top of the number of days whether it would be rehab or something else like that.

Wow, you wonder how she even passed her driving test?
"come off the round about at the exit for so and so."
"uuuuuh, can i call my assistant on my cell phone for that?... i don't read my own road signs..."
That's not hot.
