Adult Dance Camps

To update on the Holiday Dance Camp in LA run by Nadia Eftedal....

For latin the coaches were world class (Ruud Vermey, Maxmillian Winkelhaus, Barbara Ambrose, Shirley Ballas, Johan Eftedal), the location exceptional, and the content well worth the price.

The format was indeed both lecture (with a few up on your feet exercises) and workshops (which were mostly dancing). There were all levels of dancers in the classes from advanced beginner to pro - and the coaches picked topics that seem to benefit the wide range of students there. I was impressed with the information relayed throughout.

The atmosphere was friendly and enthusiastic. It was a great experience!

I attended the Dance Mastery camp in Las Vegas 2 years ago! What a great learning tool! Lots of fun and world class instructors!

I always got the impression that the really good dance camps ( like Independence in DC) were geared towards a much younger set and the dance camps for the older set were more socially focused. Was the Holiday dance camp like that? Oh, and I am getting confused... there is a Holiday dance competition in December in Vegas, and then a Holiday dance camp in LA? No relationship between the two?

Hi debmc! The Holiday Dance Classic competition in Vegas and the Holiday Dance Camp and Ball in LA are two different events.

The dance camp in LA had no specified targeted age set. There weren't too many young kids, but the group seemed to consist of 10 or so late teen dancers, the majority seemed to be in the twenties and thirties, and then probably 5-10 dancers in the forties and up age group.

The camp was focused on competitive dancers (rather than an age group) and I thought was good for any age except for younger kids. I would say that dancers taking this type of camp should have a good grasp on technique, patterns and have competitive experience to benefit the most from the type of information that was presented.

This thread is a little old, but just curious what sort of dance camps (for adults) are popular in 2024. I searched Google for this but I didn't really find any good results for ballroom. It is mostly ballet, tap and jazz. Of course, there are lots of good Salsa Congresses and West Coast Swing events that would somewhat constitute a "camp" with lots of workshops, parties and socials. I saw we also had this Dance Camp thread, but I am getting the impression many so-called dance camps are sort of like half day boot camps that are a part of a dance competition.

Heat Dance Camp is this weekend in Florida. Organized by Nazar and Irina. It is 2-3 days long including lectures and group classes, rounds with judges feedback and lots of private coaching opportunities. It has been sold out for months though. They did one in the summer also so keep your eyes out. Last January was the first one and I got to attend it. Very fun and informative. Doesn't hurt that there is a beach nearby for down time.

My first thought was the Heat Dance Camp, but it seems that many comps have a "camp" where some of the judges do lectures/classes during or after the competition.

Anyone attend Heat Dance Camp? If so, what was your experience? Do you have to bring your pro or can a student attend solo?

I went in Jan. 23. You can go without your pro but one of my favorite parts was the rounds. You dance with your pro like in a comp with others on the floor (but no costumes or makeup). They assign one judge to watch just you. Then after, you get a few minutes to talk about their impression and recommendations. Also, the chance to do coaching with so many great coaches works better with your pro. That said, the lectures/classes are not usually with partners and if they need you to partner up, everyone just turns and finds someone so that part is not necessary to have a pro.

The only ones I know about in Europe are offered by Mileade, and you need to speak passable French. In the US, the only ones I've attended are Mastery in Las Vegas and Stardust in rural New York.
