Advice for Selling A Ballgown

ballroomdancers.com suggests use of escrow, actually, so some type of electronic transfer would be my guess. I've never had any interest from ads I've placed, though, except for a Nigerian wire-transfer fraud e-mail.

I like Paypal. Not exactly escrow, but offers protection for both buyers and sellers. Although I don't think many people actually use it, which is very surprising. A few times I've made inquiries on ballroomdancers.com, and the sellers did not take Paypal.

On ballroomdancers.com - when contacting the "seller" typically the "seller" will dictate the style of payment accepted. On E-bay - I've experienced purchases and sales - with minimal grief using PayPal, although sometimes the "seller" has a different method of payment other than PayPal.

The problem with ebay and paypal partnership is that they now require sellers upgrade to premium paypal in order to accept credit card payment, and then paypal start charging you 3.5% in addition to ebay fees to receive payments. In the past you could say "Paypal backed by bank account only", and avoid upgrading paypal, but that is no longer an option. I guess everyone who does a lot of selling has to upgrade at some point, but for someone like me, who sold maybe $200 worth of used toys in 5 years, that's a big turn-off.

I have sold gowns on Ballroom Dancers and I received check, cleared my bank then shipped gown.

Recently I have sold gowns on EBay, actually 2 this month. There is no cost to list the gown so I put it up for a 7 day auction, does not sell, do it again.... It took about 2 months to sell the 2 gowns... I price them reasonable. And yes with EBay I do it by Paypal, again I have the money before the gown goes out the door.

LOL, my fav gown sale was turned into 4 new snow tires for my benz!! I kid my husband that my car is now sporting a new gown.

For me, I had way too many gowns and I decided which ones I would keep and which ones I would sell. I agree with the group however would never sell a gown first if I did not have others I can wear.

I am thinking of trying eBay to sell my latin dress. Never used eBay to sell. Can anyone give me any tips?

Don't price it over $600 and do NOT accept returns or offer refunds, at least without taking a cut for try-on fees. People will try to scam you.

I have a couple dresses i've been trying to sell for approx. 6 months now. I'm just wondering, what is the average time it usually takes to sell them?

Latin Dress priced at $350
Standard Dress priced at $900

I had the original designer sell my dress and it took about 6-8 months. The easy part was that I just had to return the dress to her, and she did the selling part, though took a commission of course. I have another dress that I am going to see if a local ballroom consignment can sell. I have also heard that Encore does a good job with selling dresses. To me, that is easier and safer than trying to sell on my own.

3-9 months sounds pretty good. what was the price range that you sold them at? if you don't mind me asking. I prefer to sell them myself online. What free dance ad websites are there other than ballroomdancers and danceplaza? I'm hoping to sell them soon...

I recently sold a custom Elle smooth dress ($3,800 original price) for $2,600 through Encore Ballroom Couture. It took them about 8 months to sell the dress. They do a great job of taking the dresses to the comps, keeping them clean and adding any missing stones from the try-ons. They also feature the dresses on their website.
