Advice on buying used gown!

Good news update :) Since craving that dress got me all ready to buy, I followed up on a thought I'd had in the back of mind for a while. There's a good dancer who I'd admired at comps and noticed that we're the same height. So I found her on facebook and sent her a message that if/when she had a dress to sell, I was potentially interested. And she did, and it's lovely, and our measurements are darn near identical, and we've agreed on a price, and I'm going to have my first "real" dress very soon! :dancingbanana:(So, yeah, who needs money for lessons ;) ... At least this one is domestic, so no worries about customs.)

OK bia you inspired me to finally go ahead and buy the gown I had tried on. It will need some alterations, but is close to fitting. What I like about it is how it MOVES. The skirt swirls out with a puff of underskirt in even a mild pivot. And it is not too heavy. And the price is less than a rental. So soon I will own my first real gown. Yeah!

Sounds great! I love how we all enable each other ;)

Bumping this thread - question for those of you who have sold and/or bought a used dress. How do you handle the try-on if you have to send out the dress? Do you ask for payment up front and offer a refund if the potential buyer sends it back to you? Do you ask for a down payment in earnest money? Do you send your dresses out for a try-on just on faith?

I am going to be selling some of my dresses soon, and am just curious how you have handled this. Thanks.

I have asked the person to friend me on facebook, and then have them pay for shipping for the try-on if it's a DF'er. For ones sold on the FB groups, i usually ask for the money up front. and then refund if it doesn't work.

I bought used dresses before. For example, the vendor would ask to pay $100 (which covers the shipping) no matter whether I decide to keep the dress or not. If I'd like to keep it, then I pay the negotiated price on top of the try-on fee $100. If I do not, then I ship the dress back to the vendor out of my pocket.

For a dress that the seller was asking $1,000 for, I offered to Venmo her a $300 good faith deposit (refundable if I ended up returning the dress to her), since she didn’t know me. She sent me a picture of the UPS receipt showing the cost of shipping ($29.98, which included insurance coverage for a value up to $500 and signature requested at delivery), so I also Venmo’d that amount to her. If the dress had not worked out, I would have shipped it back to her the same way, and the $60 in shipping costs would have been all I paid. As it happened, I kept the dress, so the $300 deposit ended up being a down payment on the total price.

If the buyer is someone on DF, I’d feel more confident about sending a dress out for a try-on just on faith, but I think @scullystwin42 ’s practice of friending the potential buyer first on Facebook is a very good idea.
