actually, and I won't even pretend that I don't have a strong opinion politically, but DF isn't the place for that...that said, I have been very pleasantly surprised by how supportive and non-judgemental the dance community has been from where I sit....regardless of vastly differing decisions and politics, I have seen people be nothing but compassionate toward what has been a very difficult thing for all of us to navigate...I am sorry for those whose experience has been different
Seeing what teachers, comp organizers, and vendors have posted on Facebook in the past few months related to BLM, politics, etc. has FOREVER impacted my opinion of them. Thus there are now comps, coaches, and vendors I will never spend my money with again.
Everyone has a right to their opinions. And honestly, everyone has a right to hate whom they want. But speaking that aloud has consequences. And if you’re operating in an independent contractor or sales capacity, it’s never wise to overtly alienate half your client base.
so if that’s “sad”- perhaps it is. But how many in the ballroom community have reacted to the last 6 months disgusts me. i didn’t step in the studio or take a virtual lesson for 5 months in part because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be party to it. I’ve eased my way back, but don’t think I haven’t made note of whom will never see a dime from me again.

I have some friends on Facebook who I know have a different political opinion than me, but they have conducted themselves respectfully and were thoughtful of the opinions of others. Even though I think their perspective is a little foolish at times, I have not lost respect for them.
There are others who have posted some terrible things that are completely disrespectful. And just like you, I would not ever attend their competition or go to their dance studio. There are other choices available. This actually happened in the 2016 election cycle as well. I chose to parkway with a couple of friends. I just couldn't believe they could be so hurtful for the sake of somehow winning an argument or something.

There are a couple of my Facebook connections (can’t accurately call them friends) for whom I have lost ALL respect for their judgment and common sense, due to political posts they have shared (way beyond merely “foolish” into the realm of “they make me ashamed to live in this State”). And they are not thoughtful of, or even receptive to, others’ opinions. And to be fair, I am not receptive to theirs, either.
However, I still respect them as dancers, and we are polite with each other, but we will never have any non-dance interaction.

And this is a perfect example of this thread’s title. I have no idea if you and I share the same viewpoint - and I don’t want to know - but the point is, both of us feel so strongly about the current political climate that it has forever affected our future actions. Assuming this is happening on a large scale (and I do assume that), it can’t help but impact the dance industry, as well as many other industries.
It's a weird situation... many of the people we interact with in daily lives probably have opinions which we would strongly disagree with, but if we never talk about it and don't read their social media posts it would never be a problem...
I think I just have to accept that I can still be friends with someone even if they hold a belief I think is wrong and stupid, because there are just too many beliefs that are not only wrong and stupid, but also commonly held out there. Most of the people who hold these false beliefs are victims, in my opinion; I can reserve my hatred for the exploiters who are pushing and profiting from these false beliefs.
I think I just have to accept that I can still be friends with someone even if they hold a belief I think is wrong and stupid, because there are just too many beliefs that are not only wrong and stupid, but also commonly held out there. Most of the people who hold these false beliefs are victims, in my opinion; I can reserve my hatred for the exploiters who are pushing and profiting from these false beliefs.

interesting...I must just hang out with either more moderate or more diplomatic folks...then again, I have fewer than 100 fb friends for precisely this sort of reason...I take friend pretty literally and respect has to go with that...I keep a pretty small circle limited to folks who actually want to interact with me and who know how to comport themselves

I used to be more accepting of the fact that others have different opinions than I do, reasoning that it doesn't really matter for 3 minutes while on the dance floor.
But the pandemic has caused me to rethink that. Some of these opinions DO affect me -- both off and ON the dance floor. I'm specifically referring to the opinions that reject the guidance of public health experts, which make the situation more dangerous to me than it would be otherwise. Let's say a vaccine comes out next year that's safe, but it's somewhat less than 100% effective. Even though I were vaccinated, I could become ill by dancing with someone who's infected and infectious and could overcome whatever degree of immunity I have. An anti-vaxxer is much more likely to be that someone. Anti-vaxxers also continue the spread and make it longer before the prevalence of the disease reduces thus amplifying the risk. Anti-vaxxers also evangelize using conspiracy theories and other lies to convince the hesitant to avoid vaccination. I have become less charitable to certain opinions. Myself: while obviously not an anti-vaxxer, I am vaccine-cautious. I'll base my decision on reliable facts and not on propaganda.
Don't want to get vaccinated? Fine, just stay home.

Got really sick - pass out in the hall sick - from flu one year. Already have my flu shot for this year.

You can't "forget" something you've never experienced, such as seeing children in iron lungs, or meeting people who had polio and lived with the crippling consquences for the rest of their lives.
Saw recently that "wild" polio has been eliminated in Africa because of vaccination programs.

It's important to disagree respectfully. People say things on social media they might never say face to face. It's as if they are posting to an audience without remembering that the audience is composed, in part, of people they care about.
