Amateur American Smooth

I definitely heard that from my old coach too. "Pro rhythm is for the couples who got tired of losing in latin" we're his words, more or less exactly.

Ugh yes this attitude is way too common. A very top latin pro once said to me "smooth is for standard dancers who aren't good enough to do latin." I was like HOLD UP LET ME EXPLAIN YOU A THING. After my lecture, he admitted defeat and said he had never thought of smooth that way. "That way" being legitimately challenging and demanding of a variety of skills used in both international styles, as well as ballet, jazz, broadway, etc and not at all danced by people who wish they could do latin. I felt so accomplished.

As we're nearing the end of another (collegiate) competitive season in the northeast, I just wanted to take stock of where we were at this year in Smooth at a few competitions:

DCDI: semi in Open
MAC: semi in Novice, quarter in PC, quarter in C
NYDF: semi in Amateur
BADC: semi in PC, semi in C
Harvard: quarter in Open
** I thought at one point I saw that when Harvard going to do the PC/C split, PC had close to a quarter. But a week to the event, enough couples disappeared to force a collapse of PC/C into Open. Weird.
MIT: looking to be a sizable quarter in PC, semi in C

The am field in the northeast at least is slowly but surely getting there in terms of registration numbers. Enough couples have been doing well in Gold that they're starting to break into the Open ranks, which is awesome. All we can do to pump up these numbers is do the best that we can to represent the style and show everyone why it's the coolest thing around -- then maybe more amateurs will join the Open ranks.

(Then maybe we can do the same for Rhythm...)

Hmm it was just a semi in champ this year for MAC, though it was a semi in novice and quarter in prechamp, I believe. I'm pretty sure novice was supposed to start at a quarterfinal, but there were a number of no-shows?

Did some people go pro (from champ) or others decide not to attend, or what? Or perhaps some partner shakeups as well.

OSB collegiate nationals had a healthy amount of novice and prechamp smooth couples.

Also, I think rhythm is growing steadily, but I pay less attention to that.

Technically, from the numbers (14), last year's MAC Champ Smooth should have only been a semi, so...

Ah, I see. Hmm, and the marks don't make it look like it technically would have needed to be two semis...either way, there were two more couples last year than this year, which I suppose is probably a nonsignificant difference.

Regarding novice, I think there were a few no-shows. Regarding champ and based on my memory of last year, a bunch of partner shake-ups and break-ups (mostly break-ups), many no-shows (in fact, no-registration) who had been there the previous year (or in years past) -- no one from champ last year went pro.

Open Adult Rhythm numbers are mostly up from last year -- novice went from 4 couples to 8, prechamp went from 7 couples to 9, champ stayed constant at 9. I think it's mostly thanks to your Midwest colleagues, middy -- I was super impressed with the quality of their Rhythm dancing! I know we're losing at least one couple heading into next year, but we'll see what happens.

Yeah, my team has become a sort of rhythm powerhouse, I think (though there are some good couples from other Midwest teams as well). Pretty cool. Rhythm still perplexes me, but I have developed an appreciation for it.
