I'm going to be visiting L.A. on May 14th and 15th with my friend, Rahim, to go see this year's Mayan Competition Finals.

Anyone else planning on going? I've got some questions...

Gosh, really wished I could be there. Maybe next year. :D

The nice thing about salsa is that there're big events all over the place all thru the year.

How far is Florida from you? Aren't there big events there like that Int'l Hustle & Salsa event or the Calle Ocho festival?

I wonder if it's possible for all of us to divide the U.S. into regions with big annual events in each...

Actually, I'm in Florida. :D But the Mayan Competitons are fun to watch. I reference their video clips at the website quite a bit. Very good dancers.

Some pretty amazing flashy showy stuff!

Definitely "Fire" from Salsachinita's analogy!

(whew... finally going home - is it odd that I only surf here while I'm working? Lol!)

Man, I wish I could be there  !

And hopfully, next time I will follow the flashy/showy stuff better. That was what ALL the guys there seemed to wanna do  the last time I visited. Intimidated wasn't even the word  .........I also didn't get a chance to just dance........I got thrown into patterns after patterns which I didn't do very well coping  .......

I need to work on my 'air' ........

(pardon the rant) You know... leads really should pay attention to the body language of their partner... I don't know how many times I've seen a pained expression on a follow's face because he's just tossing her around exactly like you're describing.

It's remarkable how disjointed/disconnected two people can be while dancing. Maybe more attention should be placed on this subject by instructors. :?

Amen! . . . and it's equally remarkable how unaware some leads can be regrding such disjointing!

IMO, people should visit the mayan once just to check out the woodwork on the walls & ceiling. (and bring earplugs because it can get LOUD!) but the mayan can be such a meat market. also, be careful, there have been shootings in that neighborhood not so long ago. i think part of it is that the mayan has separate dance floors which cater to and draw in different crowds....

I wish I could go there... to see the Mayan 2004... but I can't...
About being tossed around, I completely loathe it! And, as Susana Montero put it, "I don't jump and don't fly!!!". Jumping and flying are all fine in a show (even though it looks more and more to me like ballroom dancing), but socially, it's a NO-NO for me! Besides, I just enjoy dancing, not running after the leader! Ok, I'm not the world salsa champion, but I can follow... and complicated patterns might look fine on some songs... but on other songs (more romantic) I think it looks kinda foolish to twist and intertwine hands...
