Anything New?

So, what's the latest with you and your WCS?

Hard to answer that right now. Just finished a weekend of workshops with Myles and Tessa. I know my WCS has changed in these few days, but it will be a few weeks before I work out just where I am and where I'm going.

Instead of new steps, I'm trying to clean up some of my technique. And, I'm playing a bit with alternatives for my 3-4 (tap steps vs. triple steps) and my anchors. (One thing I've gotten a giggle out of lately: doing "the twist" for an anchor step! Always gets a laugh out of my partners. :D )

Here's a question: how close or how far away do your partners want to find your right hand on a basic? Some of my partners want me to reach out and make contact with them. Others want me to keep my right hand close to my body.

Oh, howd those go? How are they doing! Havent seen them in ages! S

Me and my WCS, well, trying to create a dance scene right now. We have some workshops Im really excited about for december, but I just have to make sure I have enough people to pay the teachers. Im really pushing for it to work out.

Just starting to do well comp-wise too, going to another this weekend, I still do about 1 a month.

Working on connection and anchor as always, thats my big thing. Excited about a private I have this weekend for the chance to work on that!

Why do we triple step in WCS?

My Pro gets in my face if I use my right hand when it's not called for . . . said we're not supposed to use our free hand to push or guide the follow . . .

M-m-m-m, maybe???

That matches up with what I am learning. Probably to give the ladies more freedom of expression? The exception is something like the triple step tuck turns that use the right hand on the shoulder. Isn't it funny how there is always an exception?

He is quite correct--- swing ( and most rhythm dances ) are visual as well as physical leads . The " presentation " of the un- used hand, is a signal that there is about to be a change from the current position , so-- if you constantly present, its akin to" crying wolf ", add to that, hand and arm styling can be developed if not alway presenting . ( have the same problem, with new students , when I teach salsa or any of the latin dances )

"What do you mean we, kemosabe?"

Memory from a workshop with Mark the Marine, long ago....

Q: Mark, what's the leader's footwork?
A: 1 .... 6.

*shrug* exactly what I was thinking. But what is their purpose, why were they in the dance to begin with. If we have continuence body flight, cant our feet do anything they want? So we could have footwork completely - not just occasional - led by the music.

?

Followers need to "not" anticipate . . . keep the hands where we can get ahold of them . . . and "not" do patterns.

We leaders will:
-Escort you out on the floor
-Hear the music
-Find the beat
-Put a smile on your face
-Keep us on beat
-Think on our feet
-Think a bunch of counts ahead
-Think several patterns ahead
-Keep you happy
-Keep a smile on our face
-Look you straight into your eyes
-Keep you from bumping into others
-Flirt with you
-Dip you at the end
-Say "thank you, that dance just made my day"
-Escort you off the floor

So what if we leave a couple of non-important steps out every now and then while we take a breather???

chandra . . . I'm just kidding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!;)

Chandra (miss you babe! How's school going? Why are you never online when I am?)

Answer to your question based on what I learned from Festa this weekend (and some of my own knowledge): Yes your feet can do what they want. Cavat: If you are a good follower dancing with a good leader, if he leads a weight change, you should follow it. This will result in him "leading your feet". If he leads a whip he NEEDS you to move a certain foot so it's important to be listening to the lead and move the foot needed. There are parts of the move where he won't be leading your feet (i.e. anchor) so you can do what you want provided your ready to go when the anchor is done. If he needs that right foot free at the end of the move it had better be free.

Hey, not trying to interrupt anything here, but I just thought i'd post...have a wcs comp this weekend. ^^ first one too...and im not very good, yet?

Plus, I was assigned to do the leader's part, as in female leading female, so I thought i should poke around the swing board for leading tips. If anyone happens to have any, that would be awesome, if im in the wrong place entirely...sorry. XD

Didn't we just discuss that?... oh, no that was at Strictly Westie. No worries.

General notes - without having any idea what your skill level is (in either role):

It's not about you anymore, its about partner. So your own movements should be small and clean, perhaps offering a counterpoint to complement her movement, but partner is the featured soloist. Furthermore, if leading is unfamiliar to you, you've got enough to worry about.

You aren't being scored on degree of difficulty. Stay within your limits, in addition to staying within your partner's limits. You aren't going to fool the judges.

That said, if you want an appreciative audience: "sex sells". No, that's not an officially sanctioned position, or even a politically correct one; I will defend it against charges of inaccuracy, though. It's polite to make sure that partner is cool with it before you spice it up.

Hey, were you at swing challenge? Youth strictly had a couple of girl-girls, thats why I was asking.

(Btw, Im the one with the bright orange-pink hair if you were)
