Argentine Tango Vacations?

Huh? Lots of emoticons, but I'm serious. What's the deal? Should I learn some tango, then go, and spend a week ot two in workshops? Can that really help me? Talk to me, will. I really want to know.

I've heard good things and bad things about those tours with the Tango teaching mixed in. What you need is a place to stay and a person on the inside.

I understand what you mean, will35. I'll keep an eye out for charlatans. But I think a one or two week intensive, coule be a very good thing. I think I'll try to learn a few basics here, then schedule a vacation there in the summer months. What do you think?

what did you end up doing. i'm thinking about doing the same. but the packages are priced pretty high.

Hi pygmalion, good idea! But one thing before hand: you will need continuity. With other words: already start at home, and keep on training at home when you return. Of course you are a trained dancer, but hence therefore it will be more frustrating because your brain isn´t accustomed to new food any more.

This before hand: sorry it´s been 3 years ago that I stayed in BA for the last time, my teachers now are elsewhere and that appartment is sold. But we´ve got jantango!http://www.dance-forums.com/members/jantango.40843

It is important to find teachers that will show you fundamentals you can further build upon at home, not that show tango you can get on virtually every street corner over there. jantango also knows that traditional meet ups.

thought this thread might be closed. cool that its not. totally get what you say about continuity. i've been in the ballroom scene for awhile. not a good idea to just jump into somthing new w/o fundamentals. ...thought this thread might be closed. thnx for the link.

Threads are left open unless there is a good reason to close them. Clsoe threads will have a padlock icon (I'm pretyy sure - new software and all, you know.)

Okay. Let's pretend I'm a wannabe Argentine tango dancer on vacation in Buenos Aires. Where do I go? How much tango can I really learn in one or two weeks? How do I find the pulse of the Buenos Aires night life? Any ideas?

If your intention is to go to milongas, I advise learning BEFORE you to to Buenos Aires. I remember my lessons. It wasn't as easy as learn a figure at 2 PM and I was proficient at a milonga a few hours later. Tango tours hire taxi dancers so no matter how inexperienced, you'll dance with an Argentine.

I studied for years before I went to BA and went alone for the authentic milonga experience. I had to "compete" with other Argentine men for a tanda following the milonga's codes.

It's important to know the Argentines only know about seven figures so there's no need to learn volcadas, displacements, sweeps, etc. The emphasis is on walking and moving in small spaces because there's very little room on the dance floor.
