AT suggestion for Sunday June 11th in NY

I've finally confirmed that I'll have the evening on Sunday the 11th free and rather than sit in the hotel I'd prefer to go out dancing. Can anyone recommend a good place in the city for AT on Sundays?

The best tango place to be on a Sunday night in NYC would be the South Street Seaport, where the on a good weather night there are easily over 150 people tangoing past midnight. This milonga is free. Although it starts early, it really doesn’t get crowded with the best dancers until much later perhaps at 9:00 or 10:00 pm. However, if you come with a partner, you have lots of space to dance to yourselves. The wooden planks are slippery and can damage delicate, expensive shoes, so bring some beat-up shoes that are not so slippery. Some gals wear dance sneakers but then it is difficult to pivot. There aren’t too many places to sit and because it is an open public space, don’t carry too many valuables with you as there is no place to lock up your stuff. There are public toilets in the mall area at the Pier next door.

If you have time, you may want to take the workshops that Eric Jorissen is giving on June 11 at Dance Manhattan beginning at 12:30 Smooth Boleos, 2:00 Phrasing Calo Music, and 4:00 Calesita Turns in Waltz. I plan to take at least two of them. He teaches in NYC twice a year, so it is a great chance to take his classes if you can’t visit Eric’s legendary tango house, El Corte, a European tango mecca of sorts in the Netherlands. If you begin to travel overseas for tango, make sure to go to go to one of his “chained salons.” Eric’s teaching is very special.

For your convenience, I tried to insert the URLs to Dance Manhattan, Richard Lipkin's tango site for the SSS milonga, and El Corte, but this Dance Forum wouldn't allow me to put them in this message, so use Google to find the sites and the details.

Have fun dancing!

Thanks for the info AATangurea. Unfortuantely, I'll be in meetings during some of the lessons or I would attend them. I might stop by the Seaport to check it out, it sounds interesting. I also found Lipkin's site, very useful.

Cheers,
Shannon
