Average Cost of Dance Lessons 2024

I know different areas can have different price points, but what are dance lessons costing these days for privates and groups?

I'll preface by saying that I thought to ask this question after I attended an event last night in LA with about 300 people. It was at an outdoor venue, but with a huge dance floor laid down. They were teaching line dancing and partner dancing, and it every week is a new theme. The lessons were absolutely free, and it is just wonderful to see dancing being made available to the general public, as I'm sure some portion of the people will end up in a dance studio to take lessons.

As best as I can tell, here in Southern California, the cost of a private lessons has been holding around $100 for 45 minutes, but sometimes it might be necessary to buy a package to get that price. Group classes are around $18 but can be as low as $15 up to $30 or so depending on whether or not you get a package. And let me create a new word here, Package-azation has taken hold more than ever, with studios not wanting to sell individual lessons so much, and requiring some commitment or else the price is considerably higher. Free trials seem much less common, and even a trial generally requires $50 or more commitment to get some introductory rate.
 
Boston-area answer. Rates given are for a single academic hour, purchased a la carte from an independent studio/pro. I have no insight into franchise prices.
  • Private lessons from a generic pro: $100-110
  • Private lessons from a pro with reputation: $130-140
  • Private lessons from a visiting pro who needs to cover travel: $150-$185

  • Group class from a local pro, regardless of reputation: $15-$20
  • Group class from a visiting pro: $25-$35
All of the above can be packaged, which reduces sticker rates by as much as 20%. Businesses like to promote packages because it's a more reliable revenue stream, but I wouldn't go so far as to say there is "pressure" to sell them beyond the obvious unit price benefits.

I am familiar with 2 different Studios in Nassau, Long Island, NY. Both independent Studios. My main Studio, Intl. Style, competition, private lesson. 45 min. $105-115/lesson, depending on # of lessons purchased. Group class $25 drop in, $20 in package of 10. American/Social Dance Studio, group class $20 drop in, $15 in a package. I do not take privates there, but others tell me they average $85/45 min, can vary with package, possibly with instructor. From what I hear from others, both are considered quite reasonable for the area.

Generally consistent with what I've seen in this area, except I've seen a greater range in visiting pros, depending on the pro and the travel distance. Also, some types of reputations I'm willing to pay for (e.g., "has trained the basics into kids who are now as adults making Blackpool amateur finals"), and others not (e.g., "has the political pull with respect to judges and judge selection to improve your USA Dance results").

In NC/SC, I tend to see group classes around $15-$20, and $80-$120 for 45-min private lesson with a small discount on multi-lesson packages. Range is dependent on the studio - independent vs franchise, and experience of the teacher.
 
In Chicago area: groups are 15-20; privates are 85-125 from what I’ve seen.

Seattle area on the other hand: groups are 20+; privates are 100+

I'd say the same for my location in the Midwest. Both of my pros charge $100 per lesson. The pro that instructs my son and me charges less ($80).

There are a couple group/party combos around here where the entry fee is $15 (includes both).
 
Chicago 'burbs I pay
  • smooth pro $100 per 45 minute lesson
  • rhythm pro $75.
In both cases I buy 20 lessons at a time. But I know some of rhythm pros students pay him 1 lesson at a time. I'd rather to the group amount rather than zelling after each and every lesson.

I'm in semi-rural North Carolina and agree with this pricing. $80 for an hour private lesson, ~$100 for a private lesson with a known Pro. Groups I see vary from $10-20.
 
Socal area. Private lessons range from $100-$150. Lower range is typically on a package pricing, independent of course. There are few social private lessons I've tried like Argentine tango or wcs and they are below $100. Guest coaches range from $180-$300. Group classes are from $15-$20
