Hi, I have a bachata private lesson tommorow, and the problem is that I have to tell him what specefic things I wanna learn/develop during the class. and I don't know what to ask the instructor to teach me, since I don't know much about bachata.

Last time he showed me how to do the right hip movement (I noticed a lot of people don't do it correctly), and a some sort of body swing (following the bass ) he also corrected the way I hold my partner and practiced some basic turns I know.

But now I'm starting to run out of ideas and I don't wanna waist the money I spent on a private class :p Any suggestions ?

Thanks !

For most lessons I generally ask the teacher what I need the most work on. Dancing for a few seconds tends to give them plenty of content to work on. :)

We self taught Bachata. The basic steps are pretty straightforward, and only require practice to get the style down. The key is in the hip movement without bouncing up and down, and and also keeping the shoulders level. After that there are two routes you can go. In other dances you typically learn more and more turns. In Dominican Bachata they tend to go more for footwork improvisations. If you Google the phrase below you will find a you tube video that gives some good examples of what can be done.

But, at the end of the day you are going to be limited by the preferences and abilities of your instructor.

A friend of mine was around my local salsa scene when bachata first appeared (5+ years ago I think). Apparently a guest instructor visited the city to teach the new craze that everyone was so eager to learn. According to my friend, this instructor's movements on the 4 and 8 were similar to those of a dog urinating against a lamp post.

Fortunately we've come a long way since those days.

Actually some teach the count as 1-2-3-Lift-5-6-7-Lift. While I'm not sure it is quite lift and pee, I don't think it is very sexy or attractive. An example of it can be seen in the Youtube video if you Google the following:

The video you find by Googling the following is much more realistic in my opinion.

Bachata Dance Steps : Bachata Dancing Body Movement - Youtube

The brief lessons we had in Dominican were even more basic than that. "Your hips have to be sexy. 1-2-3-sexy..."

Thanks guys I think I'm not gonna take my lesson right now, I'll save it for later :p
The footworks look awsome ! I'll try to learn some of that

It usually comes down to one thing: How can I improve my fundamentals? Working on anything else (like new moves) is usually a waste of money in private lessons.
