Ballroom Outside Classes

Howdy!

I've been dancing ballroom for about half a year now and I'm really enjoying it. I've been training like crazy for my first competition in a month at standford and I'm stressing about it a bit. I want to let loose a little bit with my ballroom and just have fun with the dance instead of drill and routines. Most of the social ballroom I get is dance parties after a lesson but most everyone leaves or the people who stay I end up doing really basic to intermediate moves or giving mini lessons. Are there any other places besides these after lesson dance parties a ballroom dancer coul go to? Maybe have a drink or two? ;)

Sorry I live in San Jose California. Ballroom queries in search typically just yeild the same format of lesson>dance party

OH just read pygmalion's post. Woooooooow i'm going to check it out. WHere the heck was I looking... :(

I'm in San Jose. There are two places for dancing that are good for social parties. One is at Cubberley in Palo Alto which caters to people that are new to dancing and one is at CBD (Cheryl Burke Dance) in Mountain View where I am at.

The Stanford competition (Cardinal Classic) is a fun comp. It's the largest college comp in the Bay Area where schools from Southern California and some out of state colleges attend. They hold it in a basketball gym so the floor is kinda sticky, but it's a very casual environment. The crowd will cheer everyone no matter what level you dance at. Will you be dancing the Newcomer event or Bronze?

I'm doing waltz standard and rumba chacha for latin. Bronze and newcomer for both. Took a class last semester and this semester I joined the DanceSport team at SJSU. Amazing how much more technique goes into the dances O.O

I'm pretty nervous for my first competition. My partner is absolutely amazing though so I think we'll get through somehow. She has been only dancing for like a couple months but she's super receptive to my signals :)

I know some people on the SJSU team. I'm glad to hear that they're expanding. Relax and have fun at your first comp.

Yeah we're still pretttttttty small. The girls to guys ratio is outrageous! If I had known what I know now I would have started ballroom 10 years ago :/

I was at a competition over the weekend with the Berkeley team. Seeing all the guys and girls socializing and supporting each other was really great. If that had existed when I was in school, I would have totally joined up with them.

The downside to every couple learning the exact same routine. Like watching cha cha and having everyone do a New Yorker on the same beat every time throughout the entire song.

Although, not all teams end up with the same routines. People explore and change figure placement to figure out works best for them. Some people don't use certain figures while others do use them. At least this is how our team is. Each couple uses what makes them look better.
