Barbeque and Grill

Grill = cooking meat over fire or coals without barbecue sauce

Barbecue = Cooking meat a variety of ways, though over fire and coals is the most predominant, and covering with or adding a sauce at some point

Although they are often used interchangeability (by novices  )

Thanks

I thought you bbq when you cook slow and grilling was fast and high heat?

My foreign friends & I use the words interchangeably. Barbecue is barbecue in Japanese as well.

To me, the word barbecue is a term used for informal outdoor entertaining where barbecued food is served(cooked over a grill or barbecue). I can grill fish or chicken at home in my little oven grill. It is not the same. The wonderful "yakitori" we have in Japan which is cooked at yakitori restaurants over charcoal(or sometimes gas) grills is aptly called "grilled chicken" as is the Korean pulgogi or "grilled beef".

Along these lines, I made a truly awesome Bob Marley Jerk Chicken with Cucumber Sauce on the grill yesterday - google it for the recipe. Of course, the cucumber sauce was not grilled....

That would, IMHO, be an acceptable definition. Using sauce generally means a lower cooking temp and longer time, otherwise it will often burn.

But, in the end, either way, it is food cooked fabulously!

A friend of mine, who can do amazing things with a bbq always says that barbeque is slow indirect heat, whereas grilling is direct heat.
