Bargain Ballroom Comps

Well ... reasonably priced. Anybody have suggestions? NDCA, USA Dance, collegiate or other comps are fine. If you have info or links, please post. Maybe more folks will be able to compete, if we share info. And, of course, everything is relative.

Another Elizabeth provided this one. The Yankee Classic Sunday Special $125 for adult amateurs, $90 for student amateurs. The comp is June 16 - 19, 2005.

Anybody else have suggestions? 8) btw, if you know of relatively good deals for pro-ams, that'd be good, too. :)

Edit: I changed the title from cheap to bargain. Truth is, I didn't really want cheap. I'm thinking well-run, well-organized, and reasonably priced. A good value for pros, amateurs or pro-ams. Thoughts, anyone?

USA Dance Southwest Regionals
Saturday, June 11, 2005
San Jose, California
Adults - $25
College - $20
18 & Under - $12
These prices are for entry tickets to the ballroom. We do not charge extra to enter the competitive events. So your $25 will get you in for all day, and will let you enter as many events as you are eligible for that you care to dance in. This competition is a qualifying competition for the 2005 USA Dance Nationals to be held in Minnesota in August. This competition is also a proficiency-point granting competition.

We'll also be running the California State DanceSport Championships in early November. The prices will be about the same.

It's over for this year (happened last Saturday), but UCSD's Dance By The Shores is a great deal too... I forget the exact prices, but it's also "all you can dance." As for spectating only, it's $5 for students and $10 for the public... and this year featured a double show with Bob & Julia and James & Janna. :D

Yeah, And they have some sort of cool deal for collegiate guys dancing with several ladies. 8)

It's starting to look like the best idea for amateur competitors is to find a reasonably priced comp, plan ahead, and get inexpensive tickets to fly there. A heck of a lot cheaper than doing local comps that don't cater to ams. True? :? 8)

Heck yeah!

Last time NorCal hosted Western Regionals, we saw several couples fly in from out of the region to compete. I met a couple who said they came to our event because it was cheaper and more interesting than competing where they lived.

It might even be worth it just to be a spectator. 8)

Any low-cost comps in the southeast, southwest or midwest? I'll do some web surfing, of course, but that's way time consuming and probably not as reliable as folks with first-hand experience. Plus my fave source of comp info doesn't post the individual listings anymore. :(

I'll look around and post what I can find. :)

These next few aren't rock-bottom bargains, but I feel the prices are very fair and have good experience at them dancing in the regular amateur event:

San Francisco Open
first weekend in April
Pre-Novice (Closed Syllabus) through Pre-Champ: $15 per couple per entry
Open Amateur Championship Scholarship: $35 per entry
sfopen.com

International Grand Ball
usually last weekend in July, but this year in late August
Amateur events $25 per couple per entry. However, entry fees waived if couple is on a package (this is great if the partners also do Pro/Am).
Cheapest package is $173 per person and includes all-day admission for one day, preferred seating in the evening, dinner that night, and a program -- probably not worth it unless you are dancing at least three events unless you are also doing Pro/Am. But still it's nice to see!

Galaxy DanceSport Festival
mid-September
I don't see the 2005 pricing scheme, but at some point in the past few years they had afternoon events for low-level amateurs for free, you just had to buy an entry ticket to the ballroom for like $15

Thanks, Laura. You rock. (btw. Hope everything went well today. 8) )

I honestly think that, if we can get the info out there, a lot more people might be tempted to try it out. Because of the prevalence of the big pro-am comps, I think a lot of people don't realize there's a lower-cost alternative. I didn't until long after joining DF. So maybe sharing the information will help others. I hope it does. :) 8)

Manhattan Amateur Classic (MAC) in NYC every January is around $30 for students and $50 for adults for entering up to 4 multidance events (4 styles or levels).
You get to see some of the best dancing and most adult syllabus events have at least a quaterfinal!
Entry tickets included in the price for the session you are competing in. Tickets for the evening championship sessions are around $25, cheaper for students.
Also winners (and finalists in the large events) receive scholarships (usually between $15-$50, but still nice).

Oh, it went very well -- we practiced for a while this morning. We don't actually compete until tomorrow afternoon. :) :) :)
