Understood,Only want to mention that I did not, and never would comment on someones music choice, only on the attribution!

My perspective for this thread is that I dance only the competitive international style latin (ie, not the original cuban or south american dances, nor do I do hip hop or r and b dancing) and I look through this thread for fun current music to practice to... it's not deeper than that. I don't think you'd get much music in the top 40 with an authentic cuban rumba or brazilian samba rhythm. The other posts in the thread aren't the perfect examples either - it's about keeping the practice playlists fresh for me.

I miss this thread. I have a couple of contributions... hopefully to kickstart some more replies!

Years and years - Sanctify - Rumba - 2018

My teacher disagrees with me and says it doesnt really have a rumba beat, but my partner and I like to practice to it :)
I have to admit I feel salsa on the musical (1,2,3) of the four beats to a measure. But it's cool doing rhumba spread out over two measures. I think people watching the dance would find either an enjoyable interpretation of the music and dance combination.

I have to admit, I often don't worry about if a song is "really" a X. Maybe I would if I were picking a showcase to demonstrate something. But for practice and social, sometimes you just want variety, fun and cool songs. If I was on the floor and the lead started to rhumba to that, my reaction would be "Let's rumba!"

On the other hand, I'm a less accomplished dancer than many who talk here, and certainly less accomplished than teachers. They might have very good reason to care if it's "really" X.

Exactly.

I have seen people salsa to songs on the faster end of the kizomba spectrum, or go CRAZY and salsa to songs on the slower end of the merengue spectrum. Heck I've done it. We try it, we make fun of ourselves, we get out of breath (because even slow merengues are FAST), we laugh, we take a break and grab a drink. That's the whole point of socials.
